18,000 take part in Terry Fox Run in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi, Feb 23 (IANS/WAM): Around 18,000 people took part in the annual Terry Fox Run in Abu Dhabi. The event raised over 300,000 dirhams ($82,000) for cancer research.

Terrance Stanley "Terry" Fox was a Canadian humanitarian, athlete and cancer research activist. In 1980, with one leg having been amputated, he embarked on a cross-Canada run to raise money and awareness for cancer research.

UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Sultan bin Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Terry Fox's sister and Director of Terry Fox International Fund, Judith Fox-Alder, and Canadian Ambassador to UAE Arif Lalani led the 18th edition of the run.

Since its start in Abu Dhabi in 1995, the event has funded 42 cancer research projects in collaboration with the UAE University.
