Mangalore, Mar 5: The department of mass communication of St Aloysius College, Mangalore, in association with ‘Deeds’ and the Humanitarian Relief Society (HRS), organized a talk on women’s safety and legal rights called ‘Women’s Voices, Women’s Lives’, in its on Monday March 4.

Delivering the talk, Shashidhar Chandrashekar Tatti, chief manager, Corporation Bank, who also practiced law, said that there is a famous saying that ‘Mathru Devobhava, Pitru Devobhava, Guru Devobhava’. “First comes ‘Matru Devobhava’ which means women are treated and respected as God. In the contemporary scenario, the condition of women is worsening. She has no protection in society,” he said.

“In earlier days, in the Hindu traditions, there were many evil practices like ‘Sati’ system, child marriage, and dowry. Prior to 1937, the condition of women was bad and pathetic but a great reformer like Rajaram Mohan Roy made good efforts to abolish the evils of society. Till 1937, women had no right to their father’s property but from 1937 to 1956 she had maintenance right on the property, and after 1956, she was given one share in the property. Drastic changes took place after 1994, when women were treated equally and given complete right to property,” said Tatti.

Blistering over the present system, he questioned what was happening in the current day. “While we are still not able to forget the brutal gang rape of the physiotherapist, once again we are witnessing the brutal rape of a 7-year-old girl in Delhi. Women are not safe even in Karnataka,” he added.

Colonel K G R Kumar, chief security officer and general manager, Corporation Bank, and S V S Dattatreya, AGM, Corporation Bank, were present on this occasion.
