Mangalore, Mar 15: “The present educational system has failed to deliver ethical and moral education to students. Consequently, there is a steep rise in crimes by youth,” said Ashit Mohan Prasad, additional director general of police (crime and technical service).

He was addressing students during the UGC-sponsored national-level conference titled, “Psychology for Enhancing Happiness, Hard Work, and Peace” organized by the department of psychology in association with Integral Yoga Satsanga at St Agnes premises on Thursday March 14.

“Gender discrimination, atrocities against women, and other related cases need to be regulated to bring down such incidents. Imparting value-based education to the students can be an effective method of solving the issue,” added Prasad.

“Many juvenile cases have been booked wherein young boys have indulged in the criminal offences,” the ADGP said citing the involvement of a 17-year-old boy in the infamous Delhi gang rape.

“It is difficult to bring down the crime rate by adopting rigorous punishment. Instead ethical and moral aspects should be applied in the education system so that the youth lean more discipline and build a healthy personality,” he opined.

Former vice-chancellor of Manipal University Dr B M Hegde delivered the keynote address. Principal Dr Sr Prem D’Souza presided over the occasion.

Elsie Tharein welcomed the dignitaries while Dr V Premanand, convener, introduced about the conference. Werina Josna proposed the vote of thanks.

During the two-day session, the resource persons will talk on “The Challenges of Promoting Happiness, Harmony, and Peace in the Current Social Scene”, “Science of Happiness–An Indian Perspective”, “The Self and Personal Responsibility”, “Role of Family in Enhancing Harmony and Peace”, and “Consultant in Mental Health and Human Development”.
