Johannesburg, April 14 (IANS): Two buses collided in South Africa Saturday, killing one child and seriously injuring 68 others, officials said.
The accident took place on the route R36 in the northeastern province of Limpopo, Xinhua reported citing the South African Press Association.
The collision left a child dead and 68 others seriously hurt, a transport official said.
One of the two buses was carrying high school children.
The injured were airlifted to a hospital for urgent treatment.
The accident was caused by the failure of the brakes in one of the buses, the official said.
Three other vehicles hit each other as they attempted to avoid the crash of the two buses.
Road accidents have become one of the biggest killers in South Africa. In June 2012, a bus carrying about 70 passengers plummeted off a bridge in the eastern province of Gauteng, killing at least 19 people and injuring about 50 others.
