Karkala, May 16: Srikar Hegde (24) from Renjaguttu near Belman lost his life in an unfortunate incident on Wednesday May 15. He was swimming in River Shambhavi near his home in Renjaguttu with his friends as usual, when his unexpected end came.

Hegde, who had completed his B Com degree from Alva’s College Moodbidri in the recent past, was hunting for employment since sometime. As has been his routine since some months, he had ventured into the river along with some of his friends for swimming on Wednesday afternoon. It is said that he was trying to swim from one bank of the river to the other, but drowned after being unable to complete the feat because of exhaustion, it is said. His friends, numbering about ten, rushed to his rescue, but it was too late.

Srikar was the only son of Jayashree Hegde and Chandrashekhar Hegde from Renjaguttu. He is survived by a sister and parents. His father works in Latur. The river is quite deep at spot where the youngsters took to swimming, as backwater from the vented dam at Palimar gets stored here. The incident, first of its kind in the region, has jolted the locals.
