Chikmagalur, May 17: In an incident which occurred at Kalipal in Tanodi village near Kalasa in the district on Wednesday May 15 night, a youth killed his mother, and then torched his house to hide his crime. The unfortunate victim who met this fate has been identified as Sannamma (55).

Sannamma was a widow, and she used to stay in her house with her two sons, Ramesh and Shekhar. Elder son, Ramesh, was unmarried, while Shekhar had loved and married a girl, but his wife had deserted him because of his addictions and bad habits.

On Wednesday night, Shekhar came home fully drunk and fought with his mother. Reportedly, he asked Sannamma to transfer three acres of land the family owns, to his name. Ramesh was away in connection with a proposed alliance. Shekhar then killed her, before torching his house that is located alone, about a km away from other houses.

After the house and the body of his mother were reduced to ashes, at around 3 am on Thursday, he woke up people residing some distance away from his residence, to tell them that his mother had committed suicide by starting a fire. When they came to Shekhar’s home standing alone at a distance, they realized what had happened.

After Ramesh filed a police complaint in Kalasa, Kudremukh police circle inspector, Naikar, Kalasa police sub-inspector, Ramachandra Nayak, and other personnel visited the spot. They also took Shekhar into custody. Nayak said later that Shekhar has confessed to his crime.
