Class III student dies after teacher bangs his head against wall

Kolkata, May 17 (IANS): A class 3 student of a primary school in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district died here Friday, days after he was mercilessly thrashed by his teacher who allegedly beat him with a stick before banging his head against a wall.

Ten-year-old Bapi Joardar, a student of Nirdeshkhali Notunpara Sishu Siksha Kendra at Basanti, died at the state-run SSKM hospital.

"He was brought to the hospital in a critical condition. He had a head injury and died of excessive haemorrhage at around 4.45 a.m.," said a hospital official.

The teacher Champa Mondal has been arrested and a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder slapped against her, police said.

The victim's family members said Joardar was pulled up by Mondal for throwing bags across the classroom during class. However, Mondal claimed that the mother of another student had complained that Joardar regularly beat up her son.

"She asked me why I or other teachers are not doing anything about it. I tried to stop him when I saw him quarrelling with a classmate. I never wanted to kill him."

A student said Mondal banged the heads of the two students against each other. "Then she beat Joardar with a stick and also banged his head against a wall."

The student hid the matter from his parents when he went home, but a few hours later started vomiting and fell unconscious. He was admitted to a hospital in the district but later transferred to the Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital when his condition deteriorated. Finally, he was shifted to SSKM hospital.

Agitated locals manhandled Mondal and ransacked her residence after news of the student's death became public. Protests were held outside the institution demanding punishment for the teacher.

State Education Minister Bratya Basu has ordered an inquiry. "This is a condemnable offence and strong action will be taken against the teacher, if proved guilty," Basu said.

Section 17 of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009 stipulates that children cannot be subjected to physical and mental harassment. The state government has also framed rules to stop corporal punishment in schools.

The whole incident is sad. While in no way i condone the behavior of the teacher, think a while for teachers community (not her)in our country.
    1. People want good teachers to train their children - Good teachers come at a cost which we are not ready to bear
    2. who are these good teachers - No person would like to take up teaching job simply because it is not rewarding career. Talented persons would have already become an engineer or doctor. Students join BEd course when all other so called lucrative courses are full
    3. Most parents (including me) struggle to manage our own children (two in my case) and we expect the teacher to do well with minimum 20 students and sometimes close to 40
    4. How many times you have tolerated when your child deliberately and continuously misbehaved?
    5. to take out the domestic frustration was there only one child in the class? That too a poor child?
    6. easiest thing to comment is to say when the child misbehaves bring it to thee attention of the parents. As if we like teachers writing complaints everyday about our wards. We immediately term that teacher is incompetent. We never like complaints and for that matter even the headmistress does not like complaints from the teacher.
Dear readers, teachers job is one of the toughest nowadays. believe it or not. Thank god, he made me an engineer. By the way Henry sir, engineers mistakes become monuments.

No wonder how some grow up to become so cruel and rapists!
But of course no justification for
    any crime,
But such cruel people in society create hardcore criminals!

Bang her head against the same wall in the same way.
Further, this is precisely what i meant by 'being a woman 'in one of my comments with regard to a poem, in the 'Special'Columns. How can a teacher act so dastardly? How can she be a 'woman' at the outset?

Very sad and unfortunate death that occurred. Appears that it was an accidental death, so to say. Having said that, Teachers need more training and counseling to handle such cases of disciplining the children. As Leslie Fernandes said earlier, it was a spur of the moment action by the teacher as she did not intend to harm the student in that drastic way.

Very sorry to hear this.May be a poor Family .otherweise the teacher had not the guts to punish that child to the extreem. why dont they do the same with her? hit her head against the wall.then she will understand .and in India I think in some area it is not yet teachers realized that punishing children is not allowed and what here she did is Horror. sometimes do some children naughtiness.and not always honest.but a teacher has to correct him and bring it parents notice.

Sad to read this story. Like to share importance of a teacher, "When a doctor makes a mistake, a person goes 6 ft below the ground. When a judge makes a mistake, a person is hung 6 ft above the ground. But when a teacher makes a mistake , the entire batch of students is destroyed." As long we have teachers by chance, such tragic events will occur. My deep condolence to parents. RIP.

Nothing new. Education dept and Teachers at every level need to be urgently trained in soft skills and about the laws applicable. Punishment in some of the schools is beyond any accepatable level Teacher is like a monster for young children. Authorities act now.

ANIMAL INSTINCTS OFTEN COME OUT IN STRESSED SITUATIONS. THIS IS A SPUR OF THE MOMENT OFFENCE WHICH COULD NOT BE CONTROLLED BY THE TEACHER. THERE MUST BE REGULAR COUNSELLING FOR TEACHERS WITH REGARD TO CONTROLLING ANGER. TEACHERS ALTHOUGH ARE VERY IMPORTANT PART OF SOCIETIES OFTEN HAPPEN TO BE FINANCIALLY AND DOMESTICALLY CHALLENGED TO THE BRINK. IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO PREVENT SUCH ISOLATED RAGE THAT IS DEMONSTRATED AGAINST TINY AND UN-RESISTIBLE CHILD WHO CAN BE MORE INTIMIDATING THAN ADULTS AT TIMES.
