Hassan: Raft made from banana trunks gives way, three die

Hassan, May 31: Three youngsters, who were trying to go on a joyride by using a makeshift raft made of banana trunks, drowned and lost their lives at Devipura village of Arkalgud taluk in the district on Wednesday May 29.

Five boys had tied together banana trunks to make a floatable raft. They then used this raft to move around the tank in their village. As soon as the raft reached the middle of the tank, the rope holding the trunks together got snapped. Out of the five boys, Nagesh and Manjunath, who knew swimming, survived. Puneet Kumar (16), son of Rangaswamy, Manjunath (17), son of Beere Gowda, and Ravi (17), son of Sanne Gowda, all from Devipura village, drowned.

As the incident occurred at Hosakere located outside the village, the boys could not be helped in their hour of crisis, it is learnt.
