Udupi, Jun 1: Sharath B Shetty (20), son of Shambhu Shetty from Bailoor Korangrapady, and Shobha Shetty from Pangala, drowned accidentally in Pangala rivulet on Thursday May 30 evening. The tragedy occurred near Pangala Mandedi Alade in Innanje village.

Sharath, who had completed his hotel management course, had visited the place of his maternal grandparents to take part in two housewarming ceremonies. In one  of these houses of his close relatives, religious rituals connected with housewarming were held on Wednesday and Thursday.

Housewarming ceremony of another newly built house was to be held on Friday. Sharath Shetty, a close relative of V G Shetty of Ideal Medicals Udupi, decided to spend time with his relatives and began roaming around by the side of fields bordering Pangala rivulet with  them on Thursday evening.

The group of six youth including Sharath was walking by the bank of the said rivulet, when the footwear of a person slipped and fell into the rivulet. Two youngsters, who went down to recover the footwear, slipped, and were about to drown. Sharath Shetty and Siddarth together rushed to save the duo.

Siddarth rescued both the youth, but no one noticed then that Sharath had gone missing. After sometime, they found that Sharath was not with them. After an operation which lasted for 30minutes in which locals also got involved with, the body of Sharath was recovered from the rivulet. He was rushed to a private hospital in Udupi, but was declared brought dead.

Kaup police visited the spot and recorded statements. In the meanwhile, housewarming ceremony that was scheduled for Friday stands cancelled.
