Now pay online before you book your appointment for passport

New Delhi, Jun 20 (PTI): To reduce non-availability of appointments and to check 'no-shows' of applicants at Passport Seva Kendras, the government has made prior online payments compulsory for booking appointments at more centres, including the National Capital Region (NCR), with effect from June 21.

Reviewing the operations over the last one year, it was observed that a large number of applicants were not turning up at the passport offices despite taking appointment.

"This was not only resulting in lesser utilisation of processing capacity of the Passport Seva Kendras but was also causing denial of appointments for other genuine applicants," an official statement said.

To resolve the issue of non-availability of appointments and to reduce no-shows of applicants, the External Affairs Ministry has launched online payment system for booking appointments, the statement added.

With the launch of online payment-based appointments, applicants will be required to make payment at the time of booking appointment on the government's website.

"With this, only genuine applicants will book the appointment and number of no-shows will reduce," the statement said.

Under the new process, payments can be made while booking an appointment on the website www.passportindia.gov.in - either by credit or debit card besides internet banking of State Bank of India.

Applicants can also use the challan option provided on the website and deposit the money in State Bank of India (SBI) branch after generating the challan online, it said.

"In such cases, upon the confirmation of payment receipt by SBI in online system, applicants can take appointment.

"Further, instead of an applicant choosing the date and time slot of appointment, the system will automatically give the earliest available appointment," the statement said.

From June 21, online payment system will be applicable for taking appointments at Ghaziabad, Herald House ITO, Shalimar Place, Gurgaon, Bikaji Cama Place, Lalbagh, Sai Arcade, Mangalore, Hubli-Dharwad, Bhubaneswar, Bhopal, Raipur, Shimla, Bareilly, Lucknow, Varanasi, Kanpur and Gorakhpur offices.

Earlier this month, the online payment system was made applicable for taking appointments at many offices.

The new system will be gradually rolled out in all passport offices across the country in coming weeks.

I had applied for renewal of passport sometime back at Mangalore PP office with a request to change the residential address with that of my husband's and son's, whose passports got renewed at the same passport office some 6 months before.

I had a valid visa on the passport for a period of 60 days from the date of application, which i had to surrender, after making the application payment, thinking that i will get my new passport within a month.

Unfortuantely, the police refused to authenticate my residential address, even after 2 visits to our residence, verifying with my neighbours and producing the tax as well as electricity bills, which are both in my husband's and my name having the same address which i had requested for.

Ultimately, with great difficulty, I managed to get the residential certificate from the DC office, after an inspection by the Village Accountant. Only after that the police sent my file to the passport authorities and I managed to get my passport just 2 days before the expiry of the validity of visa.

If it was delayed by another 2 days, my air tickets, travel, visa, employment everything could have been affected, and even my job.

There is something drastically wrong with the procedures of passport issuing authorities, which requires a thourough review from different angles.

Let them improve their processes first before starting accepting application money online.

this is a good move... but here are few questions.....
    1) Why is the facility not extended to bangalore PSK's...
    2) At mangalore PSK, even though we bring all the documents, the officials still say that this is not right and that is not right. We have to book another appointment for the next visit and this continues..... Now since we have already paid the amount, what are they going to do with people whom they are sending off... do they need to pay once again to book another appointment?????
