Mangalore: Convention on higher education held at SAC

Mangalore, Jul 1: "Any country for its overall development,  should excel in areas like education and health. If we want to bring reforms to higher education then policy of the government should play a major role," said Dr B L Bhagyalakshmi, director, department of collegiate education.

She was addressing the gathering during the convention on higher education held at Eric Mathias hall, St Aloysius College on Sunday June 30. The convention was organized by Association of Mangalore University college teachers (AMUCT).

"People say that as lecturers we demand and recieve a higher pay scale; in this case we should prove that we deserve it," said Dr Bhagyalakshmi.

"The attitude of a teacher towards teaching should change through which we can bring reforms in higher education. Instead of waiting for the government directions, we can go for various internal changes," she added.

Health and family welfare minister UT Khader was the chief guest of the programme. In his address he said ‘This is an occasion where idea must erupt which will guide the government in framing policies to improve higher education. Just like farmers, even teachers are the backbone of a society who contribute in the country’s future," he said.

Assuring teachers his support to all their issues, UT Khader said, "it is a teacher who knows the capability of a student and will help them to go ahead in the field they are good at. Our future progress we owe to a teacher, he added.

On the occasion, minister Khadar released the bulletin of AMUCT. Dr A M Narahari, former president of FUCTAK briefed of the issues of higher education.

Fr Swebert D’Silva, principal of St Aloysius College presided over the function while Dr Devananda R Gaokar, joint director, department of collegiate education, Mangalore, C H Murigendrappa, president of FUCTAK, K M Nagaraj, general secretary of FUCTAK, T M Manjunath, president of KGCTA, Bhagyavana Mudigoudra, general secretary of KGCTA were the guests of honor.

Dr Norbert Lobo, president of AMUCT welcomed the gathering while Purushothama K V, general secretary delivered the vote of thanks.
