Mangalore, Jul 5: Dr Bhamy V Shenoy a well known activist and an alumnus of St Aloysius College, addressed the teaching staff of St Aloysius Pre University College onJuly 4 at 3:15 pm in the Loyola Hall on the topic ‘Education Today’.

The Rector of St Aloysius College Fr Denzil Lobo welcomed and introduced the guest speaker Dr Bhamy V Shenoy. The principal  Fr Elvis Lewis was also present.

Dr Bhamy V Shenoy is a graduate of IIT Madras. After working abroad in oil industry in US and Russia, he returned to Mysore to get involved in India’s development. As an activist, he has been associated with Mysore Grahakara Parishat, an NGO for consumer protection and Pratham, an NGO for providing education to slum children.

Dr Bhamy V Shenoy told the staff about his contributions to the society and how he has been working to fight corruption. Speaking to the staff he said that the education system is bad today and also told them that the teachers should create an environment where the student is encouraged to ask questions and that they should be encouraged to read books which will improve their critical thinking so that they could be able to contribute to the society.

Shenoy also interacted with the lecturers and urged them to always have interactions with their students. It is not the curriculum that is essential but true education means having the power of questioning.

He asked the staff to spare at least 90 minutes in a week outside the regular classes in order to encourage the reasoning power of students. The lecturers put forward their queries which were answered by Dr Shenoy.
