Mangalore: Fallen tree injures nine of family

Mangalore, Jul 5: In an incident which occurred late night on Wednesday July 3, nine members of a family were injured after a huge banyan tree got uprooted on their house in Bolyar within Soorinje gram panchayat near here.

Hasanabba (70), Mohammed Mustafa (40), Zainab (32), Abdul Salam (38), Mansoor (27), Afeel (19), Sahina (30), Safrina (5), and Sayeem (2) suffered injuries of varying degrees. Among them, the injuries of Hasanabba and Abdul Salaamwere are said to be of serious nature. They were admitted into a hospital for treatment.

At around 11.15 pm on Wednesday, the banyan tree fell on the house, which had 12 occupants. The neigbours said that the accident would have caused more damage and loss of lives if the tree had fallen at the central portion of the house, two rooms of which have been razed to the ground. 

After hearing the shouts of the family members, people from neigbouring areas came to their rescue. Zilla panchayat member, Eshwar Kateel, revenue officials, and others visited the spot and helped the family.
