Mangalore, Jul 13: The Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Saturday July 13 organized an interactive session with media persons and tour operators about the development of tourism in Udupi and Dakshina Kannda districts.

Various delegates who were present discussed why a tourist does not get attracted to Mangalore.

Yathish Baikampady of Panambur Beach Tourism Development Project said, "Media plays a major role in development of tourism and in attracting tourists. There are various problems coming in the way of tourism development in the district."

As a suggestion to increase number of tourists to the district, he said the local people should be tourist-friendly. "At late night, if somebody is found moving around in the city, do not chase them, as security at night is a sign of a healthy society. Instead, extend your support to tourists and see the change which takes place by doing so."

Prof Shyamprasad, executive director of Hotel Moti Mahal said, "A tourist, whenever he or she visits the city, faces lots of problems and importance should be given to solving them. We have various cultural and other festivals celebrated with fervour here, it is important to chalk down those and advertise them in order to attract tourists."

He further added, "A person travelling to any destination looks at security first. Kerala is ranked top in tourism destination today, but it was not so about 15 years ago. Tourism in Kerala has increased mainly because of the government's encouragement and because of dedicate staff in the tourism sector. The same should be applicable even here in order to boost tourism."

A media person pointed out, "Various historical monuments in the district are not being maintained properly. In addition, the district also lacks good road connectivity to tourism spots and there are no proper sign boards installed either. If all these are done in a systematic manner, then tourists will search and visit the places."

William D’Souza of Globe Travels suggested convening a meeting with elected representatives and other tourism officials to discuss the issue. "A representation should be made to the government to create a separate tourism board in the district in order to undertake development work and monitor it."

Eulalia D’Souza, proprietor of Lia Travels said, "A separate tourism police should be appointed or a part of the police personnel should be trained to be tourist-friendly, which will help in boosting tourism."

Aloysius Albuquerque from Summer Sands beach resort also spoke on the topic.

Mohammed Ameen, president of KCCI, Vathika Kamath, chairperson of tourism committee of KCCI, M Ganesh Bhat, treasurer, Jeevan Saldanha, secretary, Nirmala Kamath, Manish Chowta among others were present.

Still we are all discussing about Tourism etc., All the Beach at both district, the concerned dept., never think about action plan/developments, simply discussing with Media. Our Hon'ble MLA's/Minister's should take keen interest put efforts about the Tourism action in both the District. It will not click, simply sanctioning Lakhs of Rupees to near by road etc.,/and programming certain Utsav's here & there finisnished Annual Drama, it is happining contineously in both the District always. CONFIRM ACTION PLAN TO BE PROGRAMMED FOR THE BETTERMENT OF OUR DISTRICTS. REQUIRED.

Tourism will grow if you are open minded in accepting values and practices of all cultures. British have no sun through out the year hence need sun bathing!!!Cannot say we are encouraging tourists but they should be fully clothed and they should eat vada sambar or sajige bajil and no meat !!!

I am planning to start resort near river with multiple activities which can attract forein tourist. What support I can get from KCCI? Do I have to bribe every department for approval of licences or do I have to expect attacks from some of our moral policing gundas. We need protection and support from Govenment to develop tourism. KCCI should have investment centre where they can issue certificate of incentives for the products purchased locally or imported to delvelop tourist places.

Let DK promote One tourism i.e., Beach/river Tourism. We can say, Yes we have the capabilities to achieve. We have several beaches and rivers, where families can have music, dance and fun on weekends that would help them to take out stress. There are many things required to promote beach tourism and the DK Tourism development corporation should have the acumen to do it. - let me give one e.g. how to reach Tanir Bhaavi very fast - If a bridge both traffic and walkway is built between Sultan Battery and Tanir Bavi road and also the road between urva market to sultan battery is broadened, mark my words the weekend holidayers can have a wonderful time and will save travel time which we take going via kulur which is a horrible road. Introduce minimum toll system to recover the cost. To achieve this beach tourism we will take nearly 10 tourism because of red tapism. The flyover at Jayshree gate on the way to padil and kulshekar is a clear example of red tapism. It will be at the end of the day only talks and talks, meetings and meetings, running and cycling programme for this cause and that cause and then back to our respective houses to start the week next day.

Mangalore is about 50 years behind in time for tourism. Added to this recent bad publicity world wide about recent moral policing, rapes and murders will put off any tourist coming to Mangalore.
Next item is roads which are unusable and difficult to cross. Lack of foot paths.Number of people who drive through road accidents. Corrupt police who let rowdies to get away with murder.Badly organised local transport system. No safety on the beach. Put all these things right and then talk about tourism.

We have seen Countries like especially Dubai in UAE, Singapore, Bangkok, Thailand, etc well ahead of tourism sector just because they do not have any other National Income to support their economy. Where as in India, no need to invest heavily in tourism sectors since we have many other resources to support our National Economy. But we have various religious centers which attract more pilgrims than tourists from all over the World. Yet due to wide spread corruptions in all sectors, our Government is not serious about developing proper infrastructure basically road networks which is main hindrance for any developmental works. Coming to Coastal region, the three major problems we are facing now are Power, Road Networks and Hotel Accommodation. And it is not easy to develop these three sectors since almost all our people oppose to land acquisition act. Apart from these problems, we are lacking visionary Leader who will lead in the front too. When we have option to elect only 10th or 12th pass candidates then how we can expect any development in our region?

BEACH TOURISM : Unless and until the CRZ Act is amended one cannot think of beach tourism. The KCCI is probably not aware of this. The KCCI only knows Mr.Yathish Baikampady and whatever he does is Beach Tourism for them. I suggest you get experts from abroad or even Goa to educate the people on beach tourism, environment and pollution. The local people will get good jobs too.

The sector of tourism requires private as well as public sector involvement. India is changing because we have now modern airports as well as seaports that will attract many foreign tourists to visit South Kanara and avail of the historic sites that are already in existence. In addition, we now have many religious sites and industrial sites that are of equal tourist importance. Lets make best use of them.

Travel and Tourism therefore requires close intervention of the Government with the private groups so that the industry may flourish all over India with the help of the State as well as Central Government. Now that our bus stations are also being modified and renovated, that will be an added attraction for the Tourist business. Everything takes time, and let the time help us all.

Enough has been said already about our roadways, our hotels and restaurants, as well as our shopping centers and cottage industries. All that we need is an overall progress in all that we have and all that we should focus in our future needs and wants.

Even if a cruise ship or a tourist plane should visit Goa or Cochin, our Karnataka Government can easily coordinate with our neighboring States and can extend our tourist facilities to those neighboring states by providing an overnight transit to South Kanara and enjoy some of our touristic facilities for a mutual benefit.

Not too long ago, our cruise ship stopped by at the port of Alexandria in Egypt, and we were given two days break in order to undertake a separate tour of Cairo, Luxor and Suez by road as well as by private jets.

Therefore, there are many ways to expand our tourism with the help of many other neighboring cities and share the benefit of tourism by giving the very best to the tourists. Government subsidies and unbiased government supervision is very essential in order to make tourist all over India a fruitful and profitable venture that benefits all.

I am sure J R Lobo will take the lead and fulfill the promises made to the people of Mangalore with the help of concerned ministers. The infrastructure scenario in Mangalore is in total shambles. Only multi story buildings are coming up and absolutely without basic amenities. No good parks / foot paths are vulnerable to pedestrians/RTO has no plans for syestamatic parking/lack of public toilets/no modern bus shelters/very poor drainage net work/ most of the inner roads are badly maintained and drains are not covered and very thick weeds all along the roads and home ground for rats, bandicoots and snakes. When they will convert Panamboor into tourist attraction? One must come and see over seas how they convert beaches into paradise. One should take the lead from Pattaya - Bankok. The tourism awareness in Mangalore is totally missing very sadly. Now it is a wake up call to the corporation of mangalore and DK tourism authority in particular. We need to make Mangalore and DK a attractive place and boost our coastal image. Let us see what achievement would be made by the present government and the leaders to whom we have given mandate. If not it would be disgarce and will have to face the brickbats from the people of Mangalore and DK very soon.

Why a tourist does not get attracted to Mangalore is the question. The best answer to this question is first and foremost we have to get back our image which we have lost in the recent past due to increase in rapes ,murders, accidents, assault on women etc Does anyone want to risk their life by taking up tours ? Everyone takes up tours for fun, pleasure and wants to make it a memorable one and not to return with bitter experiences.A person before taking up tour takes into consideration the safety and security and the back logs in this matter is already pointed out by Mr. Eric Coelho. Mangalore is a potential place for tourism with various historical places, beaches, educational institutions, etc which need to be upgraded.Provide modern infrastructure facilities - Roads, hotels, lodges ,music and cultural activities. This will boost tourism in the twin districts. The multi cultural/religious place with multi languages spoken, with highly qualified, well cultured and mannered people will definitely attract tourist. The auto/taxi drivers should be courteous to the tourist and sincere to their duties. Medical facilities to be easily and readily available at any hour.Ayurvedic treatment is another added advantage to the tourist which needs special attention.
The multi linguistic districts can be on the top than the state where only one language is spoken through out.

How is that none of the Airline Managers are seen participating in the deliberations? Were they not considered important enough stake-holders to be invited? With so many international flights from Mlore International airport now, and the renowned Medical facilities both at Mangalore and Manipal, the meeting should have also touched upon facilitating an increase in Medical Tourism.

Tourism means rendering our place visitor- friendly. Why should any visitor come to Mangalore? For a fair answer, focus on what the attractions are.Our assets are/ were beaches, green environment, rice/ paddy fields, clean & well maintained roads, friendly people welcoming guests, good road discipline, decent manners, good public hygiene, people friendly Police, taxi men/ rickshaw drivers, absence of goons acting as moral policemen, well trained knowledgeable tourist guides etc. There is urgent need to restore the enormous damage/ destruction brought about by the builders mafia, KIADB, Chemical Industry , Indian Roads ( dis)Organisation ..our MCC cannot even keep the roads/ markets garbage free etc. Do these things first ....Tourists will come ...DO NOT OVEREXPLOIT the visitor/ guest.He/she will come again....

Gabbu, You are right!! First step towards solution is put moral polices, RSS, BJP activists(only those indulged in violence) behind bars until seaerate tourism friendly police unit is established! Release them only when tourism is fairly established and they can get odd jobs to feed themselves! Moral policing was main hindrance in tourism development! Our MP, MLA's supported them thinking about votes! They failed miserably! Now no more scope for religious India! Only scope for one India for all and religion is a private affair! Thanks to CM Siddu...he is more interested in law and order, development and budget! No time for Mandir, matt and priest of any religion!! That is a highway for development! I wish Former BJP and new Modi learns a lesson or two from Siddu! Old Yeddy dialogue of turning Karnataka into Gujarath!! In five years Gujju CM may say....we will make Gujrath a Karnataka model!! What say...Bollu/Jeevan/ Rakesh? Nagesh!!?

Why Tourism does not work in KARNATAKA…….
    1. We do not have proper roads, taxis, hotels and guides.
    2. Our virgin beaches are public toilets in the mornings.
    3. Fanatic groups in the name of moral policing molest women tourists.
    4. Foreigners need beef in the menu which is not available.
    5. Locals need to learn English and understand tourism.
    6. Sale and usage of alcohol has to be liberalized.
    7. Religion has to be set aside if we want tourism.
    8. We need a different approach and mindset.

    7. Whatever price Auto drivers ask you have to pay with out any arguments.
    8. Bikinis are not permitted in the beaches.Since it is against indian culture) you can see the water but shall not swim.

Tourism is a big subject to discuss on its own.It could be a backbone of any government in terms of profit,it creates jobs for our local people in which a family can rely on it, provided we educate our children from grade 1 itself to respect them and to offer whatever we have.look around our neighbours Singapore,Malaysia how constantly they are trying to bring in tourists and visitors, what they had to offer them nothing but the keen intrest to develop this tourism, and today with the help of government its a big industry which feeds not only the government but to all locals.Unlike these countrys we are blessed with so much of natural resources unfortunately we are failed to utilised them in our favour.Let just talk about our coastal belt, Mangalore and Udupi,we have so much to offer not only to the international but to a tourist from from India itself. Here we have our government just woken up from a monster sleep, and at least they have given a thought,so we have to agree for a age old say that"its never too late to start".However what a tourist expect when he plans for a holiday destination with his family and with his hard earn money? We have to ask this question within ourselves, lets imagine as a tourist and lets put ourselves in their shoes,do we have a security in place for these people specially when you are with your family and children? How polite we are when we talk to a outsider? Are we willing to help unconditionally without expecting anything in return? How good our hotels are,are they customer friendly? How good is our land transport system be it a car which they hire from the moment they land at the airport,is the driver is good enough to take care of his guest?Does he understand the needs of a tourist? Is he good in communication where he can understand their language?Talk about autos today how safe they drive? Our busses are nothing but killer riders and not to say anything about the roads and their connectivity, railway is another feather added to this.

Tourists would come to enjoy their holidays and are expected to follow law of the land.
Our entire coastal line excellent tourist destination.
But in our Coastal region, there are so many law makers like the kind of BD & SRS.
Tourists are not coming to learn our culture or tolerate manhandling which should be made known to BD/SRS.
Businessmen like Hoteliers, Vehicle Hirer, Retailers who are direct gainers, should see their business prospects and prevail on these goons and discuss the matter with law administrators.

If we are serious about boosting tourism in D.K., then we have to look first at the infrastructure. DK infrastructure is horrible. Take for e.g. the road to panambur that passes through kulur, it will make the person by the time he reaches the destination. Take also Ullal beach. The tourists or even the local people travel to any place to enjoy the sites, have weekend picnic, the roads are so bad by the time we reach the destination we are exhausted. The tourism development corporation of mangalore have no exhaustive ideas or plans to boost tourism in DK. We have many such programmes like boosting tourism, there is protecting greenery race, using cycle instead of cars, so weekend cycling etc etc and all that is forgotten next day after a sumptuous bfast or lunch or dinner. We have wonderful stretch of Panambur, Taneer Bavi, Ullal, Surathkal Beaches that can be converted into a tourism spot or even a weekend picnics. Tourists are not interested in shopping malls but they are interested in historic sites - take the route to Gokarnath temple, to St. Aloysius chapel, Fr. Mullers Hospital, Rosario church or to Dharmasthala and 1000 pillar temple all roads are very very bad. Mark my words none of the elected leaders will be able to set right this 65 years of accumulated problems happened due to severe corruption. Hence 1st improve infrastructure and then everything will come to its place automatically. No proper roads, bad signals, no foot paths, no zebra crossing, no parkings, no traffic indications etc etc that leads to failure of tourism. Also we need to protect environment which is destroyed completely due to concretization of Mangalore. Time to think, Time to change and all this can come with a will to do it with determination.

People can think of attracting tourism to Mangalore region, but how to you tackle BD/SRS goons who threaten/intimidate tourists n women ? Stable law and order is a priority - said lobo mama. What is the progress made in this direction ?

Nature and our ancestors left rich legacy for current generation which people think they can exploit by boosting tourism. What are the plans in place in creating tourism spots in Mangalore by current generation ?

There are smart, hero like youths in Mangalore region who prey upon innocent tourists. Keep an eye on them. Their main aim is to spoil n attack people for pleasure.
