Udupi, Jul 15: “Sports law will be formed to provide opportunity in government jobs for sportspersons as it is in Punjab", said K Abhayachandra Jain, minister for fisheries and youth affairs and sports.

He was addressing a press meet after his assessment of ongoing work on the synthetic track at Mahathma Gandhi district stadium, Ajarakadu, Udupi, on Saturday July 13.

“On this issue, we had been to Delhi and learnt about the opportunity provided to sportspersons in Punjab police department. Even we have planned to implement this in Karnataka. This will be discussed with the chief minister, home minister, and forest minister. Sportspersons should get opportunities in police, KSRTC, and forest departments. A law should also be framed to reserve one percent of jobs in the IT field,” he added.

“To give more importance to sports, a well-fledged stadium will be constructed in all taluks throughout the state. Wrestling and judo in Belgaum, bicycle races in Bijapur, and all sports of regional level will be promoted through the government. In Bijapur, a velodrome is under construction at the cost of Rs 7 crore, wherein the government has sanctioned Rs 4.5 crore but it is not sufficient. An amount of Rs 2.5 crore will be arranged from the financial department and work will be completed,” added Jain.

Later, he visited the sports hostel and talked to the students and examined the hospital facilities. On this occasion, physical education director of Ajarakadu Women’s College, Roshan, was present.

“After this monsoon, the work on the synthetic track will be immediately completed. Hence, this stadium will be transformed into a good quality stadium. Work on Udupi swimming pool will be started this year. The students of Udupi and surrounding areas should utilize the stadium properly, because crores of rupees have been spent on this stadium and it will be a loss if students don’t use it properly,” said Jain.

“Even we have received a complaint about water leakage in Mangalore stadium and it will be resolved as soon as possible,” he added.
