Mangalore, Jul 18: If you thought you needed to wear helmet only to escape penalty from traffic police, think again. In an accident that took place on Thursday July 18 evening, it was perhaps due to the helmet alone that a rider could save his head, literally.

A person riding a brand new Honda Activa was thrown on to the road after a speeding bus tried to overtake it near Yekkur on Thursday. Despite the hard knock from the bus, the rider suffered injury only on his leg. If it wasn't for his helmet, the injury would have been far worse.

The express service bus ‘Haddadiya’ (KA19 D 5986) was plying from State Bank to Vittal.

The rider was immediately rushed to Omega Hospital, Pumpwell. The bus driver, who lost control, drove on to the divider. Luckily, no passenger was hurt.

That is not all. The bus driver Umar Sallathur reportedly fled from the scene and was chased by the locals. He was caught at the playground in Yekkur. Arguments arose and Umar insisted that the rider had suddenly taken a left and he was helpless. "I have been driving on this route for the past 13 years," he said.

When another group angrily demanded from the bus driver why he had fled from the scene, the driver had no answer, but later he meekly replied, "I am fasting". One of the persons assembled there even slapped the driver, an eyewitness said.

Even after nearly 30 minutes after the incident, the police did not arrive at the spot.

Two wheelers take driving for granted. I have observed while driving so many times. they just slip in between even if there is one feet space available for them to rush in. i seriously dont understand why do they overtake the huge vichiles from left side. It is very difficult for the driver to look at left. Also when any vehicle wants to overtake, it should pass from the right(drivers side). This would reduce lot of accidents happening to two wheelers.

Helmet saves lives so does buckling up with seat belts. But speed kills life. This my advice to all riders and drivers.

The problem is, In India if any accident occurs ppl tend to beat the drivers even though its unintentional. This makes drivers flee from the scene. Authorities to be taken care of taking action against wrongdoer in such incidents not people like any other countries.

Noel & Anthony.... Please dont pay the religion card here..... The actual meaning of "accident" is something that is done unintentionally.... So the driver did not know the religion of the person who was knocked down and neither the crowd knew the driver's religion.... The crowd was angered because the driver fled the scene instead of helping the injured victim.... I dont know when this religion blaming attitude in Mangaloreans will improve.... Ofcourse it was started by a certain faction of vested interests belonging to a particular religion.... So we should dilute their goal and not aggravate the same.....

I completely agree with Mr.Antony D'Souza. His observations are practical. Driver was chased and slapped because he belongs to minority. The situation in Coastal Karnataka regarding social justice to minorities nowadays is worst. This incident also reflects the insecure situation of minorities. Accidents occur accidentally. We have concerned authorities to deal with them. No need to manhandle any drivers. whatever they did to Mr. Ummer Salettur is injustice.Nothing more to pen.

My helmet saved me too when I met with an bus accident few years back.. 3 inches gap luckily or else my head would have been squashed. Bus drivers drive recklessly in the city.. Is there any law in this world to take action against them??? Make them drive slow n safe.. All they do is race with other buses and race against time..

What is wrong with these drivers? They always drive in a rash manner killing pedestrians and others. Something should be done to control these drivers. They think that the entire road belong to them and they drive their vehicles thinking that the roads are like maidans.

One thing is strange I came across a experince i.e in Mumbai metro the people consider like this accidents are of a silly, doesnot even bother to help the needy but what I saw here in mangalore and near vicinity people gather together immediately to help the needy or sort out the problem amicably.Really a strange feeling!!!.

As commented by shameer, I think the chalta hai attitude of us Indians is one reason and other one the bribe factors are the strongest weak points in our system once these are taken care everything will fall in place and we will have a beautiful India and may not crave for Dubai like country. Fasting does not mean running the Bus so Fast.
Since the fasting makes the person slightly weak and reduces his concentration and alertness (applicable to all Religions), fasting persons should not be allowed to drive heavy vehicles and endanger others lives.

Give two more slaps to driver, because he made mistake and simply giving reason that he is in fasting. I am working in Dubai now here is 47 degree temperature and so many our Muslim brothers are following fasting but they are driving properly & if they made mistake police never give excuse for them all are same they will put heavy fine.

I know this driver personally and he is not rash unlike the other express bus drivers. Infact he drives very well and at a very decent speed. If he has been driving for 13 years and this is his first time accident then who are the locals or us to judge? Secondly, common sense says that ANYBODY in India who is in a 4 wheeler and meets with an accident should flee the spot cause the locals act like hooligans and are very judgemental. They take law into their own hands and do not see whose mistake it is. A 4 wheeler driver is ALWAYS wrong according to them if there is a pedestrian or a 2 wheeler involved. And then ofcourse the poor driver being from a minority community stands against him. I feel sorry for this driver cause I know for a fact that he is a very safe driver. And the fact that the Honda Activa was "New" goes to show that the rider must be a beginner and so mistake could very well have been the riders??

It is indeed very sad that the drivers run away immediatly after the accident. This is because of bad behavior of our new generation.Else the driver could have helped to take to the hospital.People should be learn to more rational.God help our culture.

Totally agree with your comments Gabbu.

The owners of the buses are equally responsible for the calamities caused by the drivers.

The owner wants more collection, less fuel consumption, the drivers and conductors have no choice than literally make the buses fly on the roads to make sure they don't miss any passenger to increase their collection with least time spent to stop.

In case of accident - the owner claims insurance or makes sure the driver/conductor bear for the damages.

Our police officials wake up once in a blue moon and do a catwalk.

RTO...Issues licences as if they are distributing sweets. Very lenient, No checks, no checking of history of the applicant for past accidents etc.

All together it's a 'chalta hai' attitude and with this attitude the passengers have no other option to take a risk.

Just check speed of Express buses travelling in routes - Mangalore to ullala, thokkottu, Vitla, Mudipu, Konaje, etc. Narrow roads, speed is beyond limits... Passengers hold breath in fear... Pray for safely reaching destination. More importantly, it is the bystanders, Two wheeler traverllers who end up becoming victims of these monstrous drivers.
