Hassan: Eight dead, 59 rescued in bus crash near Belur

Hassan, Jul 23 (IANS):
Eight people, including a college girl, met a watery grave Tuesday when a state-run bus skidded off a bridge and plunged into a lake near Belur in Karnataka, police said.

Fifty-nine passengers were rescued, a senior police official said. Among the dead were the conductor, Vishwanath, and the college girl, Vivian Pinto, while the driver escaped with injuries.

"The accident occurred when the crowded state-run (KSRTC) bus plunged into the Vishnu Samudra lake, one kilometer from Belur and about 50 km from here," Inspector General of Police Ramachandra Rao told IANS.

Hassan is about 200 km away from Bangalore, the state capital.

The bus, which left Sakleshpur, was proceeding to Belur, about 40 km away, packed with passengers when the accident happened as its driver tried to avoid colliding with a bike and swerved to left, crashing into the bridge railings and plunging into the lake.

The lake was filled to the brim with rain water.

Hassan Superintendent of Police Ravi D. Channanvar said of the estimated 70-72 passengers in the bus, at least three-to-five were still missing and rescue operations were on to trace them or their bodies.

"Of the 59 rescued by fishermen and villagers, 35 have been shifted to the district hospital at Hassan and 24 are being treated at a hospital in Belur," he said.

Rao said: "Attempting to avoid a head-on collision, the driver swung the bus to extreme left, lost balance and plunged into lake. The toll could rise."

The twin temple towns of Belaur-Halebid are a famous religious and tourist spot in the state as they were the capital of the Hoysala kingdom during the 12th century.

Karnataka Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy announced Rs.3-lakh ex-gratia to the families of the victims and assured the injured that the government would bear their medical expense for treatment.

The rescue and relief operations were hampered as hundreds of people from nearby villages thronged the spot to see the site of the mishap.

No point in accusing the driver in most of the accidents.

In Karnataka also there are boards with same comment, But our (some)drivers hit them too :), so now those boards are no more...

I just passed by this place on the previous night and there are about 5 to 6 tank bunds on these roads and they are very very narrow and dangerous. A slight mistake you are going to be off the road, there are no guard rails protecting the sides. I think the people in charge of the roads should install the guard rails on the side of the roads. Another thing is all of a sudden you see a median and there is no reflector , you are going to run over this median if you are not using your high beam.

It is not the fault of driver, it is the fault of the KSRTC BUS Depo of Sakeleshapur Depo. If they know the bus is old and several time the problem of connection between staring and the front wheel. In that situation they have not send to the rout.

Beluru-Halebidu are famous religious and tourist spots in the state. The BJP government spent crores of tax payers money on temples, but did nothing for the roads and bridges leading to these temples. See the roads to Kukke, kateel, and dharmasthla..all same narrow single roads.Accidents are common everyday and what we are looking for is ,how much the kin will get from the government, nobody asking what will be done to avoid such accidents.
The police, the revenue department,DC are fully responsible for these narrow bridges which causes accidents.

Reckless driving is the main cause of accidents. Drivers need awareness towards their attitude in handling a over loaded passenger bus. Require speed breakers(humps) at most of the curvy roads on the high ways. This will save precious lives. RTO should come out with life saving plans to make Indian roads safer for travellers. Transport ministers must wake up in this century.

It happens in a matter of seconds and in situations nobody can avert what has planned by Almighty.

I HAVE ALSO RIDDEN AND DRIVEN EVERYWHERE...
IF THE BUS IS GOING IN A MANAGEABEL SPEED THERE IS NO NECESSITY TO TAKE A SHARP DEVIATION ON A WATERY LOCATION...
WHEN YOU ARE A COMMUNITY DRIVER YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO TAKE NECESSARY PRECAUTIONS IN RELATIVELY DANGEROUS AND HAZARDOUS LOCATIONS LIKE A BRIDGE, PETROL BUNK, RAILWAY CROSSING, NEAR OR BEHIND A ENERGY TANKER OR THE LIKES...
YOU ARE NOT DRIVING TO REACH HOME...
YOU ARE DRIVING TO REACH TRUSTING PASSENGERS HOME...
UNCONTROLLABLE SPEED AT A UNMANAGEABLE SITUATION WAS THE CLEAR CAUSE...

    Very tragic news.

Bad Roads, Sign boards, Vehicle condition all contribute to accidents - but mainly it depends on the driver who handles the situation and averting the accidents & casualties.

    ALL IN A HURRY...
    NO TIME TO THINK REALISTIC...
NO CONCERN FOR RESPONSIBILITY TOWARDS HELPLESS PASSENGERS (MANY OF THEM CHILDREN)...
THERE MUST BE REGULAR SAFETY COUNSELLING FOR THE DRIVERS...
LESS THAN 2% ACCIDENTS HAPPEN DUE TO MECHANICAL FAILURES...
98% ARE DUE TO HUMAN NEGLIGENCE, ARROGANCE AND UNTIMELY VEHEMENCE...

Why Govt is so lapse on issuing Driving Licenses ?
Any hidden agenda of population control ??

Bad luck for eight passenger who have perished in this accident.

It looks like a Volvo bus. The driver might have been over speeding and could not control the vehicle. Speed will never reach us to the destination safe but controlled and cautious driving will reach us to final destination safely.

In Kuwait there sign board on highways saying, be cautious, high speed will lead to death.

    GOOD SUGGESTION FROM YOUR END.
IT'S DUTY OF GOVERNMENT TO PROVIDE SUCH FACILITIES AS DONE IN KUWAIT, TO HAVE SIGN POSTS IN HIGHWAYS.

Problem is not signboards on streets...problem is issuing driveres licenses to people who could not drive safely unlike most countries including Kuwait...and enforcing strict traffic laws like most countries again like Kuwait.

Also we have buses which are designed for good roads but road itself is not good...however this is secondary.

    Dear Flavian
Its not Volvo, its a normal KSRTC "Sahakaara Sairge" bus. As am familiar with this route in between Sakleshpur-Belur Via Arehally, the problem in this particular area is narrow road, huge clearance between asphalt road and the sideways, local drivers who are not trained for any safety driving except for a normal driving, this was just another unfortunate days for the victims. The problem in this area is that despite number of appeals to the Govt the local politicians have not improved the roads here. Except congress for the last 2 terms this place is usually won by JDS & little do they know/think or work for infrastructure in their constituency. One packet of local "Saaraai" and 500 rupees can buy the people who vote in this area during the campaign day. As we have a Coffee estate in this place, I know this place very well. The road (20 foot road )thickness at some places is as high as 1-1.5 Foot from the side ground that any small vehicle like cars (including me)cannot get down to give sides when 2 vehicles pass opposite to each other. We stop and wait for heavy vehicles like KSRTC buses or lorry to get down. The local people have requested the elected reps N times to look into this but it fell in deaf years. I assume this incident is directly or indirectly related to same road issues and a wrong judgment by the bus driver on this bad day. I hope the new govt wakes up this time atleast.
