Bantwal: Unrest in Vittal govt college - Principal sent on leave for a week

Bantwal, Jul 24: In the wake of clashes among the students of Vittal Government First Grade College that left four persons injured on Tuesday July 23, the college education department has ordered the principal to take unpaid leave for a week.

The clashes erupted after a girl student complained that a boy, identified as Kiran, had been teasing her over a love affair with a youth from outside the college. Following the clashes, the ABVP had demanded the suspension or transfer of the college principal.

While the principal is away, lecturer of the college Xavier D'Souza will be the caretaker principal.

On Wednesday July 24 morning, the students and ABVP members once again gathered in the campus and demanded the principal's suspension, stating that his maladministration had triggered a number of untoward incidents. However, till 11 am, no official arrived to listen to them, which only made them angrier.

In the afternoon, deputy director of college education department Y S Ganati visited the college and held talks with principal Udayashankar, and directed him to go on leave for a week.

Meanwhile, college education department joint director Dr Devanand Gaonkar met the students and took them to a room, where he asked them to speak out their problems. He asked them reasons for their protest, whether classes were being held smoothly in the college, what they thought of the principal, and a number of other questions and asked them to write theirs answers on sheets of paper. This apart, he also spoke to all the lecturers and office staff and sought their opinion.

After taking everyone's views into consideration, Dr Gaonkar held a meeting in the principal's office in the presence of Bantwal taluk circle inspector Anil S Kulkarni, Vittal police inspector Madhava Kudlu, college teachers' union president Narayana Kulal, treasurer D M Abdul Rahiman, and former member of college administrative committee Ramanath Vittal. During the meeting Dr Gaonkar instructed the principal to take leave for a week's time.

With this development, the unrest in the college is expected to simmer down at least temporarily.

Bantwal: Teasing - 4 injured in students' clash, ABVP demands principal's transfer

Daijiworld Media Network – Bantwal

Bantwal, Jul 24: Fight arose between students of Vittal Government First Grade College here on Tuesday July 23, leaving four persons injured. The college which has been in the news for protests and communal flare-ups witnessed clashes once again, this time over teasing a girl.

A girl student complained to the principal that a student by name Kiran had been teasing her. For this reason, another group assaulted Kiran in the campus leaving him critically injured. The issue snowballed into a fight between two student groups.

A youth outside the college was in love with the girl student and Kiran had allegedly teased her over this, which ultimately led to the fight, stated the girl in her complaint in Vittal police station.

Kiran, Harihara, Deepak and Siddique who were injured in the fight were admitted to hospital. Both the student groups have filed complaints in Vittal police station. It is learnt that police have booked cases against 42 students from both the groups.

Protest against the assault

The fight between the two student groups was followed by a protest led by ABVP condemning the assault on Kiran and demanding suspension of the principal.

The students then took a procession from college campus where they shouted slogans against the principal. The procession passed from main roads in Vittal and later a meeting was held at a private bus stand.

ABVP state secretary Ramesh K addressing the gathering demanded an end to the principal’s 'maladministration'. "Until he is suspended or transferred, we will continue our protest," he said.

ABVP leaders Vinay Alangar, Ravi Manila, Raj Kadumata, Nagesh Iyyadi, Naveen Kanyana, Shivacharan were part of the protest.

"The college principal has political motives and for this reasons, he has been creating communal fights in the campus and is not allowing students from different religions to be together. Because of this, students are getting affected," said ABVP state secretary Ramesh K.

He addressed a press meet called by him in Vittal on Tuesday. Demanding suspension of the principal, he also asked to reconsider the decision to suspend 7 students from the college. There are several people supporting the principal as he suspended students for bursting crackers.

"We have been appealing to ministers, MLA and other officials to take action against the principal, but in vain," he added.

Your Kivi Maathu is ABsoLutely correct and Timely. I liked your objective Advise. In college days, due to adolescent issues, many students fall in love with outside, inside, across caste-creed folks. When study should have been a priority, your advise is most apt in this forum.

If the students are serious about education and their future, they will hold books and pen in their hands instead of flags. It is a pity that our youths are misguided and their future is ruined by fundamentalists for their evil designs. I can see some of my classmates, who were active members of these trouble making groups are now working as bus conductors. They sincerely admit their mistakes of school life and regret it. Now it is too late. I feel sorry for the Principal who is asked to go on leave for a weak without salary. Believe me, these flag holding youths will be a curse to our society once they grow up. They will end up in jail for robbery, drug peddling, extortion, murder etc.

Even I remember same incident at Pompeii college. I feel ashamed to explain that incident, but still I will explain, two of our professors where absent same day, another professor who wanted to complete the syllabus took two hours continuously and wanted to take even third hour as well. We got upset and walked away from our class. Next day when we came to the class principal Rev Fr. Valerian Mendonca was waiting for us in our class room. He told everyone get out of the class and to bring our parents to meet him. We opposed it started shouting slogans, a day passed he dint allow us to enter, next day few students started to bring their parents, another day passed nearly half of those students where in the class, third day we all decided to bring our parents, fourth day we attained our classes. Now after leaving college I feel ashamed of myself I think that incident shouldn’t had happened. Rev Father & Gunaker Sir if you are reading my comment I sincerely apologies on behalf of all my classmate & kindly forgive us.

First arrest the flag bearers rest all will go home and classes. The main reason for the unrest is the flag and its followers. The principal cannot be suspended and he can go to the court against the authorities if they force him to take a leave.
People go to college to study and every student has a signed indemnity clause on college admission form means the principal has the authority to suspend the students when they go beyond control.

Bending Under Pressure & giving in to student radical wings is a wrong move .
Give TC s to students involved in violence in the middle of college term & don't entertain any leniency then all these students won't get admission in any colleges & parents will see that their kids won't participate in these goondagiri in future.
Dousing the fire with wrong method is a recipe for more such violent protests in future.

I remember when we had a small issue in SDM college. Our telents day got cancelled by principal and students wanted to protest. all the students assembled outside the college and the situation was about to go out of control, that is when our principal came out and seeing him 30% students silently went inside the college. 50% had their faces down, 20% who with all their guts asked principal about the talents day and he said, " I will make the college as dairy farm but will go with my decision to not to have talents day this year,, now you guys decide you want to continue or go home" by the time he finished none of the students were out. I was thinking at that time , this is too much but now i realize principal was correct in his action and decision. students will not have decision making abilities and they go with the flow, we go to college for studies, if studies are denied then protests make sense. but other than that if some one teases, loves, hugs, kisses, common man, students should be students not baaps

In the last two years if you look back majority of the problems at colleges and schools and universities has been due to instigation by ABVP. It is high time parents of all students stop their children getting involved with this organisation as they will get into trouble and finally get a police record which will destroy their future. Then only option left for them to become a politician or join BD or RS. Parents please advise your students to be careful with this type of political affiliated student wings. Their only motto is using the students for their selfish political purpose. Many students have spoiled their career by affiliating themselves to this type of political associated students wings.

A small advise (kivi maatu) to all students, parents in DK that dont allow the things go to police station for any matters relating to you/college.Once police book the case against the students,it will be a permanent records that may spoil the career. It effects at the time of issuing pass port, getting job, going to abroad at a later date etc.,
Now students may not undertand the seriousness of their act but it may cost you people heavily later. Please do not listen local BJP,RS,ABVP,NSUI,CFI,Congress or any political leaders blindly.
Parents have to form a seperate local committies apolitical in the interest of their wards to safe guard any evils in later years.
Remeber student time is not for politics or creating turmoil in the name of union activities. Please remember those who are provoking you people are jobless, futureless leaders.

Virus has entered the college campus now. Thanx to all communal minded political groups. At least campuses were not the victims of these parties and groups. Now even in colleges there will be groups of different communities who will be fighting among themselves and promoting the ideology of party they support. Schools and colleges were the place where we learnt what is friendship and unity but unfortunately now friendships and batches have been replaced by parties, sangha, sene and federations.
