Niddodi ultra mega power project will go ahead as planned - Govt

Daijiworld Media Network - Bangalore

Bangalore, Jul 25: It is official. The 4000 MW ultra mega power project at Niddodi in Mangalore taluk will be built as per plans, and set up very close to the sea. This was told by chief minister Siddaramaiah in the Upper House of the state Assembly on Wednesay July 24.

The project will be taken up by union energy ministry and will be coal-based.

This means that despite various protests, not one but two mega power projects will fill the landscape of the coastal region.

In reply to a question raised by BJP member Monappa Bhandary during the zero hour, S R Patil, on behalf of Siddaramaiah, who holds the energy portfolio, gave the answer in written form stating that the power plant at Niddodi will go ahead.

The project is in the first phase and a team of officials from the centre have conducted a survey at Niddodi. As per the report furnished by the team, talks are being held with KIADB with regard to the acquisition of land for the project.

Factors like suitability of land and environment will be taken into consideration and further steps will be taken only after seeking permission of the central environment and forest department.

A team of officials from the centre had visited Niddodi on May 16 this year to conduct a survey. Representatives of Power Company of Karnataka Ltd (PCKL), KIADB, state Pollution Control Board, water supply department and others have also inspected the land. The central team submitted its report on June 19.

The central government has sanctioned 12 ultra mega power projects to be set up in various states. Niddodi project is one among these.

Sources said that as per the report submitted by the central team, the project should come up on land that is not agricultural or one used for horticulture. The government should identify land that is barren, or government land and so on for the project. About 600 to 700 acre of land will be needed.

Another 250 acre of land should be earmarked for ash pit which should be situated about 10 km away from the power plant. Also, 100 acres of land should be identified for setting up a township at a similar distance from the power plant.

IT'S A COMMON SENSE THAT A COAL-FIRED POWER PLANT THAT TOO UMPP 4000 MW !!!(Ultra Mega Power Project) IS ACTUALLY BAD FOR THE SURROUNDING VICINITY AND CREATE ECOLOGICAL IMBALANCE BY POLLUTING "FRESH AIR AND THE SOIL".

OUR MINISTERS OR SAY THE PEOPLE WHO ARE AT THE PLANNING OR AT THE HELM OF AFFAIRS ARE NOT BOTHERED AT ALL... BECAUSE THEY NEITHER STAY OVER THERE NOR WON'T UNDERSTAND THE "REALITY" OF THE "SUFFERINGS" OF THE ORIGINAL INHABITANTS.

THE ENTIRE PROCESS TO START THIS UMP-PROJECT ON A FERTILE CULTIVABLE LAND AND THEN RELOCATING PEOPLE IS UNJUSTIFIED BY THE SOLE NAME OF "DEVELOPMENT".

THERE IS VAST TRACT OF LAND AVAILABLE IN "NORTH KARNATAKA" WHERE RAILWAY LINE IS ALSO WELL CONNECTED TO "TRANSPORT THE COAL ETC." AND WHY THESE PLANNERS ARE NOT BUILDING THESE PROJECTS THERE? JUST BECAUSE OF NEW MANGALORE SEA PORT!!!

Government must encourage in using the dry vacant land. We have laws that invite us to care for the mother earth, pollution free land and green India.
I wish that all the residents join together and plan for the modality available to respect the rights of farmers.
Common folk, join together and collectively fight to safe guard your land and belonging. Land is your life.

We need to blame the people of this Country. When MRPL project was considered Govt said there is sufficient greenery. Now we see more and more projects coming up with more greenery disappearing year after year.Government is not keeping a check on the Population.Rather they have started to feed 1 rupee per KG of rice.No Doubt they will produce more babies as our govt will be feeding.Even now we can see families are having 5 to 8 Childern . Increase in population leads to Increase in Demand for Electricity and these new projects are meant to meet the demand. Central Government does not want to control the Population as it is a Vote Bank Politics. The beautiful land of South Kanara will disappear in years to come.

Though ours is a power deficient state, just unilaterally deciding to put a huge coal based PP on a 1000 acre fertile and green plot housing and feeding 1000s of families is not acceptable!!! However, it is portrayed to the general public such type of land acquisition a win-win situation for greedy corporates at peanut rates under the guise of govt. backed projects!!! If you go through the MRPL land acquisition saga enquiry report then anything and everything is possible with money and muscle power i.e. fertile/green/agricultural land can be shown as barren on the papers and made easy to acquire!! Another most important issue is this land has been giving steady work and income for the inhabitants from times immemorial whilst keeping the surroundings pollution free, the same livelihood will be snatched from the inhabitants and the surrounding areas including Mangluru will have rious side effects of the coal emission a living example of which is power plant near Udipi!!

Many owners might throw in the towel seeing the one time crores of rupees compensation but they should think long term and what is the use of the one time payment against loss of perineal clean and green livelihood!!! There are so many families who took this compensation getting rich overnight and then many men including older ones had nothing to do but visit ladies bars and vice dens to kill time and splurged the entire booty in no time and also invited dreaded diseases like HIV!!
It would be hence too bad to have PP of this magnitude in such green areas with well settled inhabitants!!

AND SURE MANGALURU WILL BE LITERALLY SHINING WITH EMISSIONS FROM THE COAL!! Jai ho!!!!

While going through the expert reactions from the readers, one thing is certain that it would take at least a decade or two until the said power project will join the power grid(s) of the nation. Worst case scenario is that project may be scrapped altogether. Can't we approach our needs with a fair and equitable approach? Why every project has to be considered as a national disaster? On the other hand how do we address our dream of being a developed nation? Our fiscal situation is deteriorating day by day. India is not an attractive destination for investment anymore. Baseless resistance, assumptions, arguments, blames, party line dialogues and shallow knowledge of the subject won't look after the needs of the population that is yet be born. This is a serious matter.

UPA government already made losses to Ex-Chequer more than Rupees One Lakh Sixty Seven Thousand Crores. Our Good Prime Minister alloted 'Coal Blocks' to Power/Cement/Steel sector besides family members of ministers in premium rates. Some companies do not even exists. Current rate if imported comes to Rs.14-15,000/- per tonne. It's one more way to mint money and to fool the people. Nobody bothered about environmental disaster..only looks how to run the government. Dakshina Kannada / Udupi people are already affected due to the projects like, Nagarjuna, SEZ & MRPL. Spoiling the nature & environment is easy, but the after effects are very dangerous to the mankind.

Those readers who are comparing gulf countries should make a note that Gulf countries are having purely desert land and not green land. Moreover when they launch a project they take care of the affected citizens and give proper compensation to them and not like Indian Govt.

We have Nagarjuna Power project in Padubidiri, but both Mangalore & Udupi districts are having a shortage of power. Moreover what are the plans from the Govt. to compensate and rehabilitate the affected farmers.?

What jobs Govt. can provide to the farmers.? Moreover the serious problem is the environment pollution what we see in the surroundings of Nagarjuna project.

Commenters should make a note that we have enough hospitals in Mangalore & Udupi but it doesn't mean that we have to invite more diseases by polluting the environment.

After all we should be aware that DK & Udupi will not get the power generated from Niddodi project, instead this will be given to some other places which will be a hard fact.

It is easy for us sitting far away and to say Niddodi is shining, but we should try to comment assuming we are in Niddodi, then only one will feel the heat of hard facts.

We need the development, but it should not be at the cost of Environment pollution, destroying of agricultural land and killing the poor farmers who has invested their sweat in those green filled farm lands.

Why should the coastal area should have two power project in the same place.? It looks like our local leaders in the coastal area received their share and they are dumb now. Same thing happened in Nagarjuna project as well. Jai Sri Krishna Parisara Premi leaders filled their pocket for the protest and they left silently. Now the common people are suffering in the surrounding areas. Who cares for them.?

Power projects are necessary to the development of a place. As Mangalore is developing, these projects would help to get the speed. But,the Government should consider other factors, such as environment, people while approving these type of projects. And these type of power projects should be explained to the people before they decide on anything else. And definitely these type of projects should be people & nature friendly.
Along with these type of proposals, Govt. should also think of proposing some IT/ITES tech parks in undivided dakshina kannada, to give employment to the youths of this region. Today we have all the facilities, resources that a metropolitan city should have, intl. airport, port, roadways, education, healthcare, hospitality, human resource, then why the Govt. can't think about having IT parks rather as they are nature friendly and would give employment to thousands of people here. Our local MLAs and ministers should propose the plan about this.

Give adequate compensation for land owners..

Construct the house for relocated people...

Give atleast 2 employment for family of the people who gave land...

Make sure surrounding land, rivers, environment not affected..

Give all 100% employment to Kannadigas...

Don't transfer all the power generated to other parts of Karnataka, give first preference to twin coastal districts..

    Dear Ashley,

    Very good and sensible thinking.

Mangalore is developing at a rapid phase. Population, Industries, Flats, shopping malls etc. and most of the time there is power shedding.

About the project, the government must have done all the required field and environmental effect studies. We should accept this project whole heartedly rather than throwing unwanted negative views in the developmental field.

Let us wish speedy completion of this project. Mangalore is going to shine.

Dear All who Concerned about Natural Resources and simply sit looking at it.
Please listen God has given all natural resource to mankind to make best use of it. not to keep and watch or not to become lazy. see all gulf countries got natural resource like oil. and they are extracting it and make use of it. if all gulf countries had thought oil (natural resource) is not to extract and only to keep it they would not have become rich countries. They have made best use of all natural resources for general public. even salt water they made it sweet water and made it to use for general public.

you have to think in broader way when world is developing very fast and everybody is looking for luxury life.
In Mangalore more and more building s are comming up and more and more bungalows are growing, every individual is constructing a new house. and from where you will get electricity for it. to get something you have to loose something.

and those who very much concerned about health tell me how many hospitals are there in mangalore and udupi more than enough that too very close. they are running in profit. not in loss. you can say without industries also people get sick and admit in hospital. so you cant say industries only cause health problem. everyone has to switch Telivison of for one month and evaluvate yourself what lifestyle and eating habit made you sick. you will get an answer.

Establish any project any where some people will be affected. But without projects that too power projects are very necessary for the development of the country and people. We are starved of electric power and this project will definitly help in mitigating power supply to some extent. But it is also very important to protect and relocate the people affected suitably and protect the environment properly. We should insist on these issues and not block the project for any reason.

Shettre, our Shriman Nalinjee should raised this issue during the initial period while previous (BJP?) govt has sactioned this project. Our Shriman Nalinjee was sleeping or migth be watching some Blue or Red movies. Now only thing is left to raise is his 'Lungi' since previous govt already sactioned and file went to union govt.
If he raise this issue now then he can expect votes from only effected area, and other area people will raise against the raisers!! because they need electicity at others costs !

No doubt we need these kind of projects to supply power( demand increasing day by day) but why we the undivided Dakshina Kannada people should have 2 such projects? We already have one in udupi. It is very sad to see that our Local MLA s are not commenting and protesting against the second project. Though we have one project in udupi we dont get proper power supply( majority of the power is supplied to other places). Now where are they planning to supply power from niddodi?
