M'lore: Students should enhance writing skills – Dr Ronald Anil Fernandes

Mangalore, Aug 15: “Students are becoming internet savvy and not exposed to the books. The books are the real source of knowledge. The roots of the words can be obtained only through book,” said Dr Ronald Anil Fernandes, bureau chief, Deccan Herald, here.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Librarians Day, organized by St Agnes College Library, here, in commemoration of The Father of Library Science – Dr S R Ranganathan’s birthday, he emphasized the need of improving writing skills and contribution of an article to newspapers.

Dr Sr Lydia Fernandez, superior of St Agnes College stressed the need of reference work and knowing new areas of development in any field. Just copying and pasting is not real education. She motivated students to refer many books and write thesis.

Dr Sr Prem D’Souza, the president said that celebrating Librarian’s Day is the best practice of the college library and library being a learning centre is more important than the administration of the college. Dr Vishala B K, librarian of the college welcomed the gathering and Dr Noeline Pinto proposed vote of thanks. Kavitha compered the programme.

The Best Reader Award was given to the students for the productive reading and prizes to the winners of the competition. A special lecture on ‘Writing Scholarly article for Academic journals’ was arranged and for the benefit on staff and students.

Dr Vishalakshi, associate professor, department of Chemistry, Mangalore University enlightened the users on writing scholarly articles for science journals and Dr Dineshan Koovakkai, publication officer and in-charge librarian of Central University of Kerala, Kasaragod, enhanced the users on writing scholarly article for social science journals and writing bibliography according to American Psychological Association reference style.
