Karkala, Aug 22: The underground drainage installed in the Taluk Government Hospital has been damaged, resulting in the overflow of the drainage water everywhere.

This has further given way to foul smell and spreading of dangerous diseases. The patients who come for treatment here have been facing a lot of trouble due to this menace.

Started in the year 1999, with 100 beds, today this hospital has been transformed into a taluk hospital. Even after being renovated in 2006, few items have been kept unchaged and untouched, which is the prime reason for these sorts of troubles.

A 4 inch pipeline has been implemented for the waste water outlet. The sewage water thus flowing gets collected in the pit that is constructed in a corner of the hospital. Renovated hospitals, elsewhere, have been fitted with 8 inches drainage pipeline, but in case of this hospital, it remains to be 4 inches. 

The waste water collects in the surrounding areas and through this place, one has to reach out to get to the kitchen and the nurse guest house.

Another prime reason for this increasing menace of this problem is the disposal of alcohol bottles and women sanitary napkins in the toilets. Along with this the roots of bushes around have penetrated into the drainage pipelines underground.

Total expenditure Rs 4 lacs

On their visit earlier, Karnataka Health Development officials had reported for the changeover of 4 inches pipeline to 8 inches. And the total project is estimated to cost around Rs 4 lacs.

Temporary Solution

It is learnt that the cost for the temporary change of pipeline is worth Rs 25,000. The hospital administration has prepared a quotation for the same and has been sent to the approval of Health prevention committee president Yogeeshwar ( assistant commissioner).
