Udupi, Aug 27: A horticulture worker was killed when his skull was smashed with a stone by a colleague on Monday August 26.

The deceased man was aged around 45 and was working at UPCL as a contract laborer . It is said that he was killed by another unidentified comrade, who is currently absconding.

Three laborers had come to UPCL horticulture contractor Dennis D’Souza in search of work. They were taken to UPCL workers colony for work by supervisor Dolphy D’Souza on Saturday evening. But Dolphy had not collected any identification details from this work, said police sources.

After the incident, a worker who came to work with him was reportedly missing. In the room where the laborer was murdered, there were three mats, a few empty liquor bottles and empty food vessels were found. It is suspected that the two people might have killed the third person and then fled from the spot.

Among the three laborers, one of the laborer was seen by other grocery shop workers located at colony on Sunday around 7:30 pm. The person had come to shop to buy rice and had a conversation with the shopkeeper in Kannada, it is learnt.

As it was a holiday on Sunday, on Monday by 8 am, these three workers had to join work and their identity cards would be made. But  the workers did not come even after 8 am. Hence supervisor Dolphy went in search of them and the murder incident came to light.

Police teams are investigating the person who employed these workers, only after which clear details will be obtained.

A case is registered at Padubidri police station. In order to catch the murderers, four police teams are formed.

Karkala DYSP Jayanth Shetty, probationary DYSP Savitha Hoogar, Kapu circle inspector Shivanand Valekar visited the spot along with a canine squad and finger print experts.
