M'lore: St Aloysius PU College to host Chemistry intercollegiate fest

Media Release

Mangalore, Sep 10: The Chemistry Department of St Aloysius College, Mangalore believes that basic science especially Chemistry is the way ahead in research and every other walk of life. Hence it is organizing a one day programme on September 12, for the students of Pre University Colleges on the theme 'Chemistry- It's all around us'.

Prof B Rajgopal Bhat, head, Dept of Chemistry said “ Pre-university students are the right beneficiaries of a programme that can help them think beyond professional courses as a career”. This is an attempt to create an interest in basic sciences especially Chemistry, among young minds and also an effort to generate enthusiasm for the creative future of chemistry, hence to increase the public appreciation of chemistry in meeting world needs. "

"Today a lot of debate is going on the concern that basic Science seems to be losing out to other disciplines, particularly the professional courses in attracting students. Even though the basic science stream has ample career opportunities, the widespread impression among students is that unlike professional courses, a career in basic science is not lucrative," he added.

The coordinator of the event Rachael Natasha Mary said “many more attempts like this will boost students to consider basic science as a career and will definitely combat the general decline of students taking basic sciences.”

The programme will include interactive sessions, followed by various competitions related to Chemistry such as Mock Press, Seminar, Collage, Interactive Chemistry, Chemical Computation, Quiz, rangoli and Model Making.

The programme will begin with the inauguration by the Chief guest, Dr Arunachalam Kumar, director, Research and Development, Nitte University who will also deliver the keynote address. It is an opportunity to explore chemistry and discover Science as a career, motivate young minds to develop a scientific temper while celebrating the contributions of Chemists to science.
