Swamiji of Chitradurga Math to honour Malala

Swamiji of Chitradurga Math to honour Malala

Bangalore, Oct 17 (IANS): Karnataka's popular Lingayat pontiff Shivamurthy Muruga Sharana of Bruhanmath at Chitradurga, about 200 km from the state capital, will honour Pakistan's celebrity student and education activist Malala Yousafzai with the Basavashree award soon.

"In recognition of Malala's bravery and outstanding contribution to the cause of education in Pakistan, the Murgha Math (a religious institution) has decided to honour her with our prestigious award named after the 12th century social reformer Basavanna," spokesman of the math, C.T. Jayanna, told IANS Wednesday.

The award, which carries a cash prize of Rs.5 lakh and a memento, is given to honour people for their contribution to society following the principles of Karnataka's legendary poet Basavanna.

"A formal letter with an invitation has been sent to Malala so that she could visit our math to receive the award during the Sharana Samskriti Utsav in January 2014," Jayanna said.

The 16-year-old Malala from Mingora town in Pakistan's Swat district became prominent after she survived an assassination attempt Oct 9, 2012 by Taliban gunmen while she was returning home on a school bus. She had led a movement for girls' right to education and dignity in a male-dominated society.

"Swamji (pontiff) spoke to Malala a fortnight ago and conveyed the math's decision to honour her with an award. She was gracious to accept our invitation. We look forward to host her along with her father (Ziauddin Yousafzai)," Jayanna said.

It is the first time that the Lingayat math has decided to honour an international personality like Malala who shares the social values and the spirit of education the institute has been propounding over the past three centuries.

The math has been engaged in social, religious, educational and cultural activities, rendering services known to have spurred development in the southern state.

Malala should also be called to Mangalore and facilitated. Because in our district also there are many girls who are brilliant in studies but they are not allowed to go to college by elders even though they are rich. My daughter's classmate who was coming First in class till SSLC was not allowed to join PUC by her own elder brother who was working in Saudi as Engineer. Now after 7 years my daughter is a Software Engineer in Bengaluru and that brilliant girl is mother of Two children and whenever she meets my daughter she keeps on cursing her fate for taking birth in that community.

I must appreciate the courage and magnanimity of a Hindu religious leader for honouring someone from another community, especially of a hostile country. Let such magnanimous acts transcend boundaries and make the world a better place for posterity.

Malala is not any poor girl from any nation. At her age she has stood up against Taliban who are the most brutal oppressers the world has seen since decades. She has been shot almost dead, has recovered, has written a book, has created a charity foundation for the education of girls, has given the most inspiring speech at UN and other great interviews, etc all that in one year. Do we know any other poor girl who has done all that at that young age?

Oh come on.!!! we have many poor girls in india. Why to we give honour to Pakistani People. I appreciate her what she did. But swamji should think we have 100 Malala's India too. Instead of this there is widow's who lost their husband in LOC. Your honour should for them.

I agree with Mr. Mukkawala - Hittila Soppu Maddalla! There are so many poor girls are in India who could not persue their study due to poverty or any other reason. There is no point in facilitating a PAKISTANI and paying her Rs.5 lac cash and giving her a award. It is Homa in the Water - A Publicity Gimmik.

    M/s. Ek Bharat & Acharya,
Please take note that our Swamiji is not felicitating Malala just because she is poor girl. She is being awarded for her brave fight for one of basic human rights, that is right to education which is denied in Taliban controlled part of Pakistan. I hope you are aware that girls are not allowed to attend school in Taliban controlled areas. So she is felicitated by Swamiji for standing up for girls’ right to education. I hope broad minded Pakistanis will definitely appreciate this gesture.
