Mangalore: Hampankatta junction to be signal-free soon?

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore

Mangalore, Nov 3: It is common to have traffic signals at important junctions in cities. In a few big cities, traffic signal has been done away with and arrangements made for continuous movement of vehicles. A similar system will soon be implemented even in Mangalore.

If all goes as planned, Hampankatta junction, the heart of the city, will soon become signal-free.

If the signal-free system is implemented, then there is no need for traffic lights, vehicle crossing or, for that matter, even traffic policemen.

How will the system work?

In this system, vehicles plying from State Bank-Hampankatta towards Ambedkar circle and vehicles from Ambedkar circle to State Bank can move freely without signal.

Meanwhile, vehicles moving from K S Rao Road to Milagres or State Bank have to take a left turn near the signal and then right turn near the Syndicate Bank and then move towards the signal. If one has to go to Milagres, then one should take left turn near the signal.

Similarly, vehicles moving to K S Rao Road from Milagres have to move towards Clock Tower and then take a turn. Vehicles moving towards Mangaladevi from this route too have to take a right turn near Syndicate Bank.

Near the signal, on both the sides, pedestrians will be allowed to cross the road for 30 seconds. But passengers will not be allowed to catch any public transport. A bus bay will be constructed near Syndicate Bank from where passengers can catch the bus.

To implement this system, a u-turn has to be built near Syndicate Bank connecting State Bank. Hence, the traffic police have appealed to the MCC to undertake this work. But even though 15 days have passed, no technical report has been prepared by the MCC engineers yet.

The 30-meter wide road has to be built by the MCC. Once technical report is ready, permission has to be obtained from higher authority and then work will begin.

The system was proposed by Mangalore regional transport office motor vehicle inspector Charan and traffic police inspected the area twice and gave their nod.

Whether the move will be panacea for traffic problems at Hampankatta or a recipe for disaster, only time will tell.

Signal-free means again the same chaotic situation will prevail like before. And another problem is the Traffic police have to mean the entire traffic movement. Vehicles from Syndicate Bank and Milagres church side going towards KS Rao Road have to go up to clock tower unnecessarily which is a waste of time and petrol. The system is cumbersome and will create many problems if traffic personnel are not there. To avoid Traffic congestion and traffic jam the District Administration has to shift SBI Bus Stand to Pumpwell circle. If it is done everything will be Okay. If signal centers are not required why signal lights installed in Kankanady, Bunts Hostel Circle etc. Nothing but waste of tax payers money.

Drivers occupying the right lane cannot be blamed for those in hurry wanting to overtake by the left, while traffic cops are like 'dumb'observers.People in motor vehicles must be aware that they cannot drive fast on the old city's old roads. Why blame the traffic cops for a fundamental lack of discipline of the drivers.Mangalore's old roads are already saturated with traffic & cannot accommodate any more additional influx of vehicles. DECONGESTION of the old town should be the priority.Stop further influx of migrants into the old town.New comers must occupy areas in "new Mangalore" lying to the North of Kulur, beyond Bykamoady. The combined forces of the builders & developers, shady financiers, benami property speculators, vested interests in the MCC, erstwhile "district -in-charge personalities have succeeded in causing an already unmanageable traffic congestion& other problems of excessive population density.Mangalore's Citizens & their legitimate concerns have been ignored & trampled by vested interests who have influenced watering down of building norms to allow excessive construction.

Where is the justification for "high Rises" in M'lore , where roads were never planned properly? Even now, the UGD system has not been upgraded.Water distribution is still chaotic.Little wonder our traffic discipline is poor. The character of Mangalore has changed beyond recognition.Mangalore's old gentle culture has now become a rapidly changing avatar because of migrants & other influences into this once nice & peaceful environment.

Take right turn at Syndicate bank? Impossible. This will only change the spot of congestion and create more chaos. It will congest the entire stretch from KMC to milagres cross road (MCR). First n formost widen the road from MCR to Hampankatta JN and from Pereira's Hotel to Cosmopolitan club/MCC Bank, LH Rd on return. Make free left for all vehicles (except Bus) at Milagres cross road. This road upto Milagres church Jn should be one way and no parking zone. This will avoid vehicles taking left turn and then U turn to go to KS Rao Rd from Hampnkatta Jn. Widen Road in front of Tajmahal Hotel and close the road towards Rly Stn in front of Tajmahal Hotel. Making a junction 'signal less' and diverting traffic to other places will only create more confusion and chaos. This is no solution and in no way will help de-congesting the traffic at hampankatta circle.

good initiative. only time will tell if it works. hopefully, overtime drivers will get more sensible.
understandable constructing flyovers can be a hassle, but how about constructing overpasses (walkways) for pedestrians to cross the roads near the junction. keep the people on foot off the roads and naturally congestion will reduce.

Signal Free at Hampankatta - idea will save our precious time in the traffic. But at Mangalore this idea will be a "MESS" because the road conditions are very vulnerable.
To implement such ideas firstly widen the roads and make single roads atlease some of the roads which leads towards Hampankatta area and secondly ban the Autorikshaw movements at Hampankatta.
As per your statement the vehicles which is going to Milagres Church or Mangaladevi area, will create traffic jam at Syndicate Bank area or near the Tower clock area. The traffic department has to plan very well and accordinly implement the system.

It is Md.bin.Tglk. The idea surely appears to be the baby of someone who is not a native but an outsider, who will leave back the back for us to 'face' if his suggestion is implemented and then walk away ones he is transferred to another posting. Many similar things have happened in the past, 'cause of whihc we at Mangalore are suffering.

I don't think this circle system works in Mangalore, unless the police department puts up 'Right of way' signal and strictly implements it punishing the offenders. Mangalorians believe might is right and they don't care any other considerations. Put a video camera and record the traffic movements.Make people use the correct lane according to the speed. Lane cutting at circle should never be allowed.

This is just a temporary solution, it is just like tieng a piece of cloth on a broken pipe.

I would suggest govt to switch Managlore Bus station to Pumpwell or some other place. As it may decrease the volume of Traffic inside the city. And allow only city buses to travel inside the city limits and if possible introduce permit only to KSTRC buses inside the city limits (Modern Buses) with well trained drivers.

Mangalore is a developng city of India, so you should think of building future.

The present situation of mangalore is like Cattle shed, every one is coming and entering there is no much difference.

Beautiful system on paper, but with Mangaloreans driving as if they are in Pakistan (driving on the extreme right of the road with the speed of a bullock cart, who have to be overtaken on the left side-and the police watching like dumb creatures even if they know that it is traffic violation!) and other such idiosyncrasies this system may add to the already chaotic condition on the roads. But if and when this system is implemented, the traffic police should be done away with at the signal junction because they are more interested in penalising drivers than in regulating the traffic! However, my ultimate dream is completely electronically controlled (with manually driven or self-driving vehicles) road network without the parasites called traffic police.

This system is doubtful of working as it would choke the U turns during the peak hours. For instance, vehicles moving from KS Rao Road towards Mangaladevi or Falnir Road have to Give way for traffic from Statebank to Light house hill road and wait until the Uturn is clear at the Syndicate. Same will apply to all crossings. So the free drive wont realize, until a bridge and an underpass is built across the junction. Being one of the busiest junction of the state, it surely deserves. :)

I would like see Hampankatta circle return to the 70s. As a kid then my city was less wheeler dependent and no one complained. With the available space and the stubborn mentality/culture of the residents none of the ideas or plans of the published article will show any drastic improvements from the present situation. Either flyovers or underpasses are not workable solutions due to complexities of bureaucracy and long ution schedules of the project. We need some out of the box solutions. We need to find why the masses are converging to this locality? How about shifting DC and Taluk offices elsewhere? Introduce IT solutions in these offices and put every village Gram panchayat on its network.

Central market(s) need not be there at all in view of the expanding city limits. Scrap the old Bunder area. It is not serving any purpose in moderns times. Those streets were built only to handle bullock carts and hand carts. Restrict or discourage private vehicular traffic during peak hours by introducing a hefty congestion levy. Introduce parking meters. Anyone who parks his vehicle for more than 2 hours then quadruple the parking rates so as to discourage people parking their vehicles in already congested streets. certain commercial areas as pedestrian only zones. There is a lot of buzz that Manglaore is developing rapidly but my experiences show the opposite -it is rapidly self destructing.

The authorities should not forget that any diversion from Syndicate Bank to Milagres and thereonwards to Attavar and further, should bear in mind the thousands of little children involved enroute, not only of the Milagres School, but also Marjil and Holy Angels schools...and none should await a tragedy to happen to rethink their folly. Being born and brought up in that area I would suggest The MCC authorities should be sent to Chennai to study the Mount Road-India Silk House pedestrian underpass and the roads intersection in front of the Devi theatre signal or even the Churchgate - Eros theatre padestrian underpass and intersection., to study and carve out an underpass linking the Wenlock Hospital with KSRao Road as well as the SBI-Jyothi road.

Building underpass, flyover may take years. Govt should think of expanding outskirts by shifting markets and some kind of business to other place. With this the traffic can be controlled. With the current limited land availability for the expansion its not going to work out for long. Some benefit might be there but mostly the govt,MCC officials, contractors and after completion the traffic police going to be benefits in unlimited ways.

    The idea is good.
But in India, the thought always comes after the problem reaches peak situation. By the time the solution is implemented, the traffic will grow so much that the solution has very little effect. Think of 10 years from now and think of solution. Then only it may work for next 15-20 years. Flyovers and bridges cannot be built every now and then.

I am happy that the govt is taking steps to improve mlore city.. but as per my opinion underpass from KS Rao road to Milagress would be better. Taking a right turn near Syndicate Bank can further congest the traffic as there is oncoming traffic from ballmartha who will not give way... Secondly roads should be widened especially those which gets narrowed near the signals (Near Gokul Market and Near Vijaya Pen Mart). Old buildings should be demolished for better infrastructure.. here in dubai roads get widened near signals and in mlore its the other ay round. i am sure everyone have noticed this...

The idea is good but this plan is based on the assumption that everyone follows the road traffic rules and infrastructure arrangements for all the U turns are in place. Otherwise the pedestrians will be left at the mercy of the motorists .I aware that India is growing and becoming a more prosperous country .India has the highest number of road traffic accidents and fatalities in the world and this plan worries me a lot although the intentions would have been good. Over the past many years the roads have been widened but I should state that this has been at the cost of pavements and people are being forced to walk on the roads endangering their lives.Hampankatta junction is the second busiest junction in Karnataka and we really need fool proof measures there for smooth flow of traffic and safety of pedestrians . There is also a statement in the article of doing away with policemen/women.In India no one cares for pedestrians even at pedestrian crossings unlike in other countries. It is a sad state of affairs. They have been plans for subways /flyovers /underpasses but sadly these have just remained on paper for the past 35 years !

Like the Dubbawalas of Bombay, India always has something or the other to offer to the world always. If this system without signals works then I am sure this is going to be the best proof that if you leave it to them the people can manage everything for them without anyone else but by them. Is this not the basic spirit of Democracy which is of the people, by the people and for the people ? An ideal opportunity for someone at St Aloysius business business school (AIMIT) to come up with a thesis on Indian True Democracy, the only one in it’s genuine form. The best part of all this is that “We Do Not Need No Leaders No More.” So kick them out. I would like to know how many of you agree with me.
