Mangalore: An answer to critics of proposed Anti-Superstition Bill

Mangalore: An answer to critics of proposed Anti-Superstition Bill

Prof Narendra Nayak
President
Federation of Indian Rationalist Associations

Mangalore, Nov 8: The attitude of the parties, particularly the BJP opposing the Anti-Superstition Act reminds one of the opposition to the law banning Sati, child marriage etc. At that time the reactionary elements of the society, that is the forefathers of the opponents of the Act today, vociferously opposed these progressive measures under the guise of religious freedom. It was these same people who used to tonsure widows, excommunicate those who cross the seas, those who had eaten with dailts and so on. Now the descendants of these elements are opposing the banishment of some inhuman traditions like 'Made Snana', sacrifices in the name of appeasement of gods and so on.

Though we should know better than to expect any sort of welcome to the progressive measure, the venom with which they have opposed this progressive legislation says a lot about their primitive mindset. While they have no qualms about using the best of technologies from anywhere in the world, when it comes to mindsets, they would prefer to go back to the 16th century.

If an Anti-Superstition Bill is proposed it is to protect the vulnerable sections of the community for the unscrupulous elements who would like to exploit their gullibility and I do not understand why one should have objections to that. It is not said anywhere that the laws are applicable to Hindus only but the so called Hindutwavadis are claiming to be the protectors of the religion in order to cater to their vote banks. The BJP has a long tradition of promoting superstitions like astrology, black magic etc. In fact their one time poster boy Yeddiyurappa had taken his superstitions to ridiculous heights by conducting black magic even in the Vidhana Soudha. It is not that the Congress or Janatha Dal(S) are any better, but this time it appears that the Congress party has decided to change, probably due to the progressive attitude of the present chief minister Siddaramaiah.

There has been a long, nearly a decade long, struggle in Maharashtra and the bill was made as an ordinance in a knee jerk reaction to the assassination Narendra Dabholkar, in Karnataka it is proposed directly as a bill to be passed in the Belgaum session of the assembly. Those who have objections to any specific sections of the Act could as well discuss that in the assembly and bring amendments if they can convince the majority about them. The Maharashtra assembly is yet to pass this bill despite the attempts made in the past decade. The BJP has forgotten that this country has a long tradition of reformism and humanism. In trying to defend inhuman practices which are passed off as tradition the party is exposing its intellectual hypocrisy and that its founders like Savarkar were atheists opposed to such superstitions.

This attitude also exposes the intellectual bankruptcy of this party which has no better issues to rake up now! Instead of looking at the attempts to get rid of superstitions as an attempt to remove evils from the society they are trying to perpetuate old exploitatory practices. If they are really interested in the upliftment of the Hindu society they should add more such inhuman practices to the list already made and work towards reforming the society. It is possible that a large number of the banned practices are among the Hindus because they constitute nearly 80% of the population and naturally it would benefit the exploited sections. So, any party which is pro people should support this move to eradicate superstitions from the society.

You are right Mr. Raj Shetty. Hinduism is a way of life and it does not have any single preacher unlike other religions. Original preacher was Sri Krishna. In the form of the Bhagavad Gita, he taught the knowledge of the universe.

However all the religions preach humanity and belief in the unknown. When the belief is in the positive power, it is God and if the same is in the negative power, it is called 'Saitan' or 'Saturn'or Devil or Rakshasa.

I am wondering with the form of constitutional bills, how a government can curb such beliefs that is deep rooted from the beginning of mankind.

Even in Christian, Buddhist or Muslim dominated countries we come across witch practice or Mata, Mantra in a different way. Ultimately no religion can escape from such practices.

There are many wonders across the world perhaps Science also could not answer yet. When a human being thinks deep into it he finds his own solutions logically sometimes illogically, terms it as Science.

If you ask me, Blind belief is nothing but belief in the unseen. Call it as God or Devil or in any name.

It is understandable that in the good old days it took a lot of convincing to abolish Sati and such meaningless practices as there was little scope for enlightenment then.

It is shocking therefore that we still have illiterates specially among the BJP who fail to understand how dreadful it is to follow superstitions that have no logic.

I hope after reading what the author has written better sense will prevail.

How can a government be run by those who believe in superstitions??????

Mr. Anand, nobody is questioning the religious faiths, but the age old dangerous superstitions which will lead to killing or eternally tormenting fear.
Rev. C. F. Andrews was a Church of England Pastor who had greater political influence, came to teach philosophy at St. Stephens college in Delhi. He met young Gandhiji and helped him to start the law practice in South Africa however, later on he insisted Gandhiji to return to India to lead the freedom movement. Gandhiji found JESUS CHRIST in "Deenabanthu" Andrews. When Gandhiji went to visit an Anglican Church in South Africa, one member of that Church and the Pastor told Gandhiji " this place is not for the Swamis".
Pushed him out, Gandhiji was greatly offended. JESUS said " come unto me, all ye that labor and heavy laden, and I will give you rest" Mathew 11:28. That invitation is for the whole humanity of all social-economic and educational status.
Did the Priest and the member act as JESUS taught the Christians to do? If I had any authority, I could have forced the Priest and the member to apologize to Gandhiji in the open place touching his feet. Religious people of different religions are playing tricky games for their vested and material gains for that purpose, many irrational and ungodly things have crept into the religions.

We say women being worshipped in our country. But we do not allow her to worship god. We say women are equal to us but we give excuses that in olden days also women did stay at home where she was in a respectable position.By praising her , we make her mouth shut while we continuously suppress her. We want to hold back the man dominated society values , so that our competitions are less and we are the boss in the family.
All we are saying that this was our culture. Why?
When Widows started worshipping in the temple many of us could not tolerate it. We come from a woman and we are fed from a woman then the cleanliness of a woman hasn't mattered. If she was not clean why we are allowing her to bear our child and why allowing her to feed our baby?

There are many other believers , which are believed by dominating category , maybe a male category or upper caste categories in order to fool others and to gain respect, power from all. And we applied the culture name as to polish them so that it sounds good.
Hope we stop this selfish behavior soon else hope the rule comes strictly to stopping this kind of behavior.

To a certain extent one could agree with K.S.Mayya, Mangalore/Bangalore. Not that well debated Bills passed into law are not misused by unscrupulous among us, whether they are keepers of law or others. Therefore, Anti-Superstition Bill should be subjected for a thorough debate in the Assembly and then made into law or rejected. But to oppose its introduction itself smacks of political opportunism of subtly build up a vote bank as was brazenly indulged in by BJP when in power in the recent past by doling out grants only to Mutts and Temples. BJP appears to think that the general public has a short memory and still arrogantly take it for granted that all among Hindus would support it in everything it does. That it is a false notion is proved by the last State elections when they were kicked out even by the discerning among Hindus. It appears that BJP has not yet learnt any lesson from that election debacle.

Great eye opening article. How terribly, from generation to generations, weird superstitions and traditions have crept into the religions, and some crooked gurus added more bewildering superstitions to reap the material harvest under the disguise of "religion". Human fear was turned to worship that source of fear, and more fear was added. Any superstition which will endanger human lives-degradation of human status-exploitation of the poor and gullible must be totally eradicated. We are living in an age of scientific revolutions-open thinking and freedom but the antiquated religious traditions are enslaving and destroying the humanity.

Science has made it possible for the man to reach on the moon. But living in the era of Science, some of us still believe in the things called superstitions. Superstitions are usually attributed to the lack of education. But in India, educated people have also been observed following beliefs that may be considered superstitions. Earlier Prof. Narendra Nayak, president of Federation of Indian Rationalist Associations, has stated that politicians patronizing godmen serve to sanction superstitions of the general public. Nayak has also debunked several so called miracles of godmen like psychic surgery, materializing vibhuti, money, jewelry, and fire eating.

In Sept. 1995 Ganesha idol in Delhi was reported have drunk the milk offered to it. That time Narendra Nayak demonstrated that it was caused by capillary action. In a recent press release Narendra Nayak said that ISRO chairman was unfit to hold that position as he has insulted the constitution of India. So I feel few educated people of India who follow superstitions are doing so with fear a baseless fear.We are living in the 21st century still we have such stupid and baseless things in our minds. We should develop a scientific spirit of mind and judge everything on the basis of reason. This rainy season I remembered frog marriage a foolishness of superstitious people. Bravo Narendra Nayak.

Sati, human sacrifice & Child Marriage were prevalent in olden days and it was practiced as a custom. There was also a tradition that lower caste people were not allowed to enter the temple or have any good facilities in the society. It took a lot of time to change the people and the law was enacted to punish the people following such cruel practices. There were lots of resistance from people when such law was made but in the long run it helped the society.

Still we have lots of superstition in us and there is a need to reform. This reform can be done by many ways including work by reformers and also by the rulers by enacting it as law. Many people do not know what the bill is and are spreading the rumor among people that it is against right of Faith & Religious Practice.

I have not seen anything which is against the religious faith. This will also not stop us going to religious places or carrying out religious rituals.

However there is a need for eradication of irrational traditions like Made Snana, removal of shirts in temple completely. Moreover strict action should be taken against these dongi babas who exploit the followers for money and sex.

I thought only illiterate people are superstitious but some comments suggest that even literate people are equally ignorant and consider the irrational traditions as holy customs.

Even our forefathers were superstitious but we are not due to education. Certain superstition and beliefs do have a placebo effect that doesn't harm physically or financially and give some relief to their problems until they get educated. These superstitions or beliefs should not go to the extremes like human sacrifices, physical intimacy, fraud etc.
Decades ago there were great Indian social activists like dayanand saraswati, rajaram mohan roy fought against superstitions.

No Parents nowadays support elements like Sati & Child Marriage. In some case you may find Child Marriage which is a very rare one & that too in some remote corner. So do is the case of human sacrifice, which is long forgotten one. But this Bill looks like an axe on primary Rights of Constitutions, ie, Right of Faith & Religious Practice, or intention to break the basic religious faith. An issue like Made Snana is an act of pure faith & devotion by devotees in Subrahmanya, & no one force them to do so. Pada Puja/Adda Palaki is done by devotees to their religious leader in respect of their Guru.
Do these Bills mean to say Rationalists thinkings are above Devotion & Faith of People...If this trend continue, questions may arise as Pradhakshine & Bowing before the deity in Temple, Nagaradhane or Daiva Kola, etc. It is best that our elected Representatives reject this Bill or else they may be rejected in near elections.

You are RIGHT! and Prof. N. Nayak was more RIGHT. It is my RIGHT here to express my views as you franchised your RIGHT!.

In my opinion it was too late. There is a complexity in judging which is a simple pooja and which one is a FORCED Pooja etc.

A community in our society with their linguistic and sanskrit knowledge successfully led their life with all these activities since centuries. As the day passed, section among them saw a different field for their survival (livelihood) with modern education became Doctors, Engineers, Educationalists, Bankers and more Hoteliers. They found these traditional tactics may not survive for long or may not yield their bread for long.

Among brothers we can see a scientist and a Purohit. Since they are brothers it is difficult for the scientist brother to give a view against purohit brothers profession as it lead to problem to brother.

Truth lies in the scientist learnt science but he is helpless.

Now the good news is emerging but implementation is full of hurdles. It requires a few more years of long marches.

The materials what we use today (Vehicles, Medicine, Cloth, Engines, Light, Mobiles) are all the products of science.

If a purohit is riding a bike we can definitely say it is due to PETROL Shakti and not by MANTRA Shakti. But using all sorts of scientific equipments in public life and saying something not understandable to the public is really a laughing stock.

Let us hope for the best. Let scientific temper emerge among all of us. Let there be no SUSTU because of VAASTU...

    Dear Mr. KRPrabhu, Mangalore/Bangalore
I disagree with your corruption and alcohol point of view.
    1) Corruption is practiced by every human being may be a very minority people percentage may be 1-5 percent. Nobody can eradicate corruption unless the father and mother strictly teach to their children.

    2) Alcohol is for good if it is consumed a little bit of quantity as well as for bad if it is habitual/full at the brim.

Alcohol was used as anti-Bactria/alcohol swab is available for applying for wounds. Doctors suggest a few doses of alcohol is good for the heart. In the cough syrups a certain percentage of alcohol available. In almost all liquid Auyrvedic medicines alcohol is must. Recently in one of the hospitals in Mangalore with the help of pure alcohol a blockade in the heart's vein was cleared without open heart surgery. Even the curds have a certain amount of alcohol fomenting within.

    3) THE BIGGEST EVILS OF THE SOCIETY ARE DOWRY AND POLYGAMY.
Still I did not comment about superstition. I am restraining for a while.

(I do not drink alcohol or smoke nor chewing paan beeda, ghutka)

Alcohol consumed in small quantities can be a boon.
What Mr. Prabhu is referring to is alcohol abuse and how the Government is secretly rejoicing rather than curb alcohol consumption. Excise duty on alcohol is the second highest revenue garner for Government after registration fees on land sales.
Corruption 1~5 percent. From whose manifesto did you dig this out? With those numbers corruption is a non-issue for a given country and India must look across the shoulder with least corrupt countries. May be you are just counting people who receive bribes and not the givers.

    Dear Mr. K. S. Mayya, Mangalore/Bangalore,

See I have stated in my comment not only my opinion but from facts about the alcohol matter. I have cited even the doctors suggest taking a small amount of alcohol per day.

Concerning to corruption it is my opinion that may be 1-5 percentage of citizens of India will not take corruption. Although every Indian citizen is crazy for corruption

However, here in the websites most of the bjp's are blaming congress and congress politicians.

The bjp is the biggest corrupter of the country.

The bjp opposed Lokpal bill with tooth and nail in the parliament.

We need a janlokpal bill so that our jails will be filled with corrupt people.

Unless each and every family instill in corruption awareness it is very hard to regulate through legislation.

    Legislation is for offenders.
If there is awareness in every family and practiced even the legislation itself is not imperative.

Is Superstition a bigger concern than corruption and development? I don't think the majority are not impacted by Superstition.
Harming any human is already a criminal offense. This Bill is purely a vote bank politics.

Superstition is as big a spanner to progress as corruption in our country!! Go into the interiors of our country and see how the poor, ignorant, and gullible are systematically exploited by the so called "Godmen"!!!

The way Prof. NNayak has put, I think it is fair. But proponents such as Prof. NNayak fail to appreciate that in today's world anything and everything can be misinterpreted and worst, misused. I understand law against sathi, and certain practice. This law is named anti superstition law. There is hardly any debate on what comes under its ambit and what not. Who can guarantee that this law will not be misused? Who can guarantee that police will not show up on the doorsteps of the temple when you might be performing some pooja/homa on the complaint filed by your adversary that you are indulging in superstition. Why we should not interpret this as a indirect law to render the profession of purohit illegal? Sathi and all other practices are very specific laws. Superstition is a general word and open to interpretation. Why was the law not called anti-black magic or anti exploitation law and is called anti superstition law. What is the basis on which a sitting judge will decide that a certain practice is superstition or not? And how long will it take for the court to conclude? What kind of training our police have to understand and implement this law? The problem is in the specifics.

Look this proposed Anti Superstition Bill is prepared in a hurry. It is filled with many gray areas. If school children are banned to go to the temple during the annual school trip, then government should not purchase agriculture products through their APMC because agriculturist prayed rain god for good harvest. Many agriculturist Hindus performed BALIPADYA in their field at the time of Deepavali.KMF should not purchase milk from villagers due to mixing of cow (where Hindus perform Go Puja) milk with buffalo milk. One should not purchase coconut because it is produced from sacred KAPLAVRAKSHA.

    Well Written Article.
I would say They should extend these laws on these superstitions in Christianity, Islam and other too. There are priests who claim who can exorcise spirits in a human . Whereas the person in question might be having severe mental/Physical illness needing immediate medical attention. Unless we are open for these laws improvement of our society is just an illusion.

As Science Progresses and people become more educated - One day will come , all Religions will be considered Superstitious.
Religions, which are rejected by West and East are finding strong base in Poor countries of Asia South America and Africa , because of ignorance . In underdeveloped countries people are not educated enough to overcome Religious incentives and exploitation .

"Jesus has a very special love for you. As for me, the silence and the emptiness is so great that I look and do not see, listen and do not hear."
    — Mother Teresa to the Rev. Michael Van Der Peet, September 1979
