MADURAI, April 6: It was four-fold joy for Sudha who became the proud mother of quadruplets after a normal delivery, a rarity in medical history.

The four underweight infants, two male and two female and their mother are in good health, according to Dr G Krishnan of Government Rajaji Hospital, who assisted the delivery on Wednesday.

None of the babies weighed more than 1.5 kg and were being kept in a radiant warmer to maintain normal temperature. They will be in the special baby care unit for three to four weeks, he said.

This was necessary till the babies stabilised and generated normal temperature on their own.

The delivery took more than 45 minutes with 15 minutes gap for each baby, with separate placenta, he said, adding, unlike triplets, quadruplets occurred rarely.

Except for feeding, the mother has not been allowed near the infants. Till normal parameters get established, they had to be under constant care at the hospital, according to Dr Krishnan.

Sudha's husband Saravanan (47), a cycle-shop owner in suburban Avaniapuram, is happy. The couple has two girls aged 12 and seven.
