Dubai: Indian worker falls to death trying to escape blaze

Dubai, Nov 17 (Khaleej Times): An Indian man died on Saturday while attempting to escape from a burning building near Sports City, while 300 workers trapped inside managed to escape with only minor injuries.

The worker tried to jump from the fifth floor window in a bid to save himself after a fire broke out at the under-construction building near Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Al Khail Road, Director of Dubai Police’s Civil Defence department Major General Rashid Thani Al Matroushi told Khaleej Times.

He said the incident was reported at about 3pm. Al Matroushi said fire engines from Al Manara, Jebel Ali and Al Quoz rushed to the area and discovered the injured man on the ground. He was rushed to hospital, but died on the way.

He said fire fighters evacuated 300 workers trapped in the building, between the 19th and 28th floors, and first aid was provided.

Al Matroushi dismissed remarks that the fire may have been caused by a faulty circuit, as electricity was not yet installed in the building.
