Bangalore: In angry outburst scientist C N R Rao calls politicians 'idiots'

Bangalore, Nov 17 (PTI): Venting out the dissatisfaction in the scientific community over "inadequate" funding, Bharat Ratna awardee and eminent scientist C N R Rao today had an angry outburst as he called politicians "idiots" for giving them "so little".

Addressing a press conference a day after the award was announced, Rao, who is the Chairman of Prime Minister's Scientific Advisory Council, stressed the need for providing more resources for research.

"....for the money that government has given to scientific sector, we have done much more," he retorted, when a reporter asked if he felt that the standard of the scientific research in the country.

"....Why the hell these idiots these politicians have given so little for us. Inspite of that we scientists have done something," Rao said, losing his cool.

"Our investments are marginal, comes late.... for that money we have got, we have performed. For the money we have been getting it is not bad at all, after all this kind of money is nothing."

Asked about China progress, the scientist said that,"We also have to take blame on ourselves, Indians we don't work hard, we are not like Chinese. We are easy going and we are not as much nationalists...If we get some-more money we are ready to go abroad."

There may not be unlimited money with Govt. but politicians & industrialist have. There is a great spillage of revenue. There are enough resources but it is getting waste lying idle in places like swiss bank. In spite of their misdeeds, today politicians are safe because of our press people who are also beneficiaries. It not only politicians, it is the responsibility of citizens. We never fight for common cause. We don’t even write to press. We cry silently.

Many who commented here knows little about Prof. CNRR. Prof. CNRR is primarily responsible for the state of Indian Science as he has been a scientific advisor to PM more than anybody else in India, incidentally only during Congress Govt. He wrote editorials in major newspapers against the Vajpayee's decision to go ahead with nuclear tests. Jaswant-Talbott strategic talks followed those tests and since then US is silent about NPT. Against world standards the amount spent on research is indeed miniscule in India. But that is also true on the accountability front. There are many students of CNRR who had a nervous breakdown because of his constant verbal abuse. He spoiled many careers at his whims and fancies. Even today at the age of 79 when all others retire he continues to hold some post or the other and controls every appointment in the academia.

It is common knowledge in Indian academic circles that one cannot survive for long without his blessings. Contrarily, without any abilities you get to lead institutions with is patronage.
If you want an example of nepotism CNRR represents that. To get a better understanding of the politics of Bharath Ratna, kindly go through the complete list of Bharath Ratna awardies and analyze when, under what circumstance and who got Bharath Ratna. It is another political award whose true meaning has been rubbished by CNRR's dear idiots.

Who is Prof. Rao to comment about public funding? The people have the right to ask what his real contributions to science are, apart from 1500 papers and few doctorates? I am sure poor people of this country haven't benefited from any of the 'so called discoveries' he made. Our economy hasn't improved with any of the scientific results he produced. Name few of his discoveries that contributed to the industrial development of our country.

Our planning is not done by politicians, but by wise economists and other professionals. There is a planning commission to do that job. Prof. Rao completely and conveniently forgot about those facts.

Please learn to appreciate the little money that you have sucked up for doing something that you only are interested in, to produce research papers, train few gentlemen who aggressively poach research positions in other institutions at the expense of other creative scientists, and then head a scientific mafia.

Mr. Rao may be a Bharatha Rathna. But, you must understand that he is a human being and has the pain and suffering at the hand of politicians behind his great scientific efforts all these years.

Imagine, a scientist of his stature has to beg before politicians and govt. servants who do not have the necessary qualifications, for getting funds for scientific research.

He did not say all politicians are idiots. He said 'idiot' politicians are responsible for low level of funding of scientific achievements. I guess he is right. When vote banks drives decision making on the allocation of the nation's resources, this sad state of affair is bound to happen. We all know which political party ruled this country for over 50 years post independence. India could have been a world power by now with all the natural and intellectual resources at its disposal. But we have become a nation of looters continuing the legacy of the British. Looters kept unsuspecting poor to bother with issues like religion, caste, food, clothing and shelter so that they never have to worry about the country or its prosperity. Surprisingly no political party has responded.
