Kolkata, Nov 18 (IANS): Stressing the importance of animal husbandry in a rural economy, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Monday announced her government's plan to extend medical insurance to those working in the sector.

"Animal husbandry is an important source of livelihood and a key component of the rural economy. For the development of the sector, we are planning to provide medical insurance to all attached with it and will discuss the matter with insurance companies," Banerjee said at an event here.

Banerjee inaugurated a "Government Marketing Centre" for promotion of animal produce, as well as a "Central Dairy Laboratory" at the 17th Animal Resources Development Week.

Observing that development of the rural economy was integral to the growth of the state, Banerjee emphasised on the need for synergy between industry and agriculture and called for measures to rev up small and cottage industries.

She also said it was the duty of the government to look after the rural population whose life had become difficult because of rising prices. She asked officials of various departments to work tirelessly for the welfare of the sector.

"Time waits for none, and it is your duty to reach out to the people with your work. It is criminal to neglect work. You have to love work. People have put their faith in me and it is my duty to work for their welfare," Banerjee said.
