Guwahati, Apr 18: Legendary singer and Dadasaheb Phalke award winner Dr Bhupen Hazarika, who had suffered a mild cerebral stroke, was stated to be "stable" by the authorities of the Guwahati Neurological and Research Centre (GNRC) in Guwahati where he was admitted.

The 80-year old singer and director slept soundly on Monday night and had tea on Tuesday morning, the GNRC sources said.

Stating the Dr Hazarika was also talking, the sources said his health was constantly monitored by doctors at the intensive care unit where he was been kept for observations.

The singer was performing at a stage show in Noonmati Bihutoli on the last day of Bihu celebration on Sunday night when he suffered the stroke and was admitted to the GNRC in the early hours of Monday.

Besides cerebral stroke, the singer had got some heart problem, but was responding well to the treatment.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and All Assam Students Union (AASU) advisor Samujjal Bhattacharjee were among those who visited the hospital to enquire about Hazarika’s health.

Following his illness, the singer cancelled three stage shows he was to perform.
