Mangalore: Illegal power supply - Mescom officials raid dental college

Mangalore: Raid on dental college - Mescom imposes fine of Rs 3.45 crore

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (BG)

Updated

Mangalore, Dec 9: The Mescom officials who swooped down on Manipal College of Dental Sciences and Hospital imposed a fine of Rs 3.45 crore for taking unauthorized power connection through KMC hospital since 2008.

As reported earlier Mescom officials here along with their counterparts from Shimoga, Chikmagalur and Udupi raided the college on a complaint by social worker P S Haneef Saheb that the college had been using power supply through illegal means for several years.

However, after an operation that lasted throughout the day, the Mescom officials said that the college, despite not having authorized power connection, had been paying electricity bills regularly.

A fine of Rs 3.45 crore was thus imposed on the college for unauthorized extension of power supply through KMC.

The college was also directed to obtain licence and get an electricity connection at the earliest.

Mangalore, Dec 9: The officials of Mescom vigilance department on Monday December 9 raided a dental college located behind KMC, Attavar, on a complaint that the college was illegally using electricity.

The complaint was lodged by social worker P S Haneef Saheb against Manipal College of Dental Sciences and Hospital.

The complainant alleged that the college was sourcing power supply illegally from KMC. Accordingly, the Mescom on Monday conducted the raid.

On investigation, it was reportedly found that the Manipal college had no licence from the city corporation. It is suspected that electricity was being taken from KMC hospital for the last 2-3 years.

Sources said that if proved guilty of violation, a penalty of approximately Rs 8 crore may be imposed.

Mescom vigilant department SP Harishchandra told reporters that the raid was conducted based on a complaint that the college was taking illegal power supply from KMC.

As there are seven floors in the building and the raid is a big one, teams from Shimoga, Chikmagalur and Udupi have also been deployed, he said.

"The checking is in progress and will go on till evening. Every point will be thoroughly checked, and the exact information about the illegalities will be known after the inspection," he added.

Speaking to daijiworld, complainant Haneef Saheb claimed that the illegal supply of power has been taking place for the last seven years. "We have calculated the loss incurred in the last three years, and that alone amounts to Rs 6 crore," he said. He added that the building has no permission from MCC.

The raid operation was led by Mescom vigilant department SP Harishchandra and DySP Vinay Gaonkar.

As a common man my simple common sence says
1.Where as they have paid the bill no question of stealing arises.
2.Mescom is run by reputed electrical engineers why they did not check this matter earlier.
3.When Mescom has vigilance dept.what they were doing .
4.As a reputed hospital KMC-if they drag the matter to the court(I am sure they will do it) I am sure the case will backfire on Mescom.
    Good luck KMC, Mescom.

Please understand the way power tariff is laid. Hospitals are charged less per kilowatt hour than commercial establishments. What Manipal is doing in not education. It is just a business like a hotel or a bar. Its is a purely commercial entity. Actually if it was some private guy he would have been arrested. I think 3.5 crores is peanuts... One MD seat's cost I guess for "MONEY" PAL

As usual, this will be a debate between BJP and Congress here. Everyone knows what party KMC group of institutions support, and everyone also knows what political party a lowly social worker like Haneef Saheb supports....In the end, nothing will happen to the corrupt. We (common people) will throw mud at each other accusing each other of our political affiliations, and the big (corrupt) fish will get away by paying a small fine after greasing palm of public officials... Corruption is in our DNA if we go through our history books and see how our ancestors were also highly corrupt....Same sh*T, different day..nothing new!

My question is. Will Manipal pay this Fine? Is there any deadline set for this? Will MESCOM disconnect the existing connection if they don't pay the fine? After a week nobody will remember this we will have one more news to comment. I think after 10 years (too early I guess) we should file one more RTI to know whether MESCOM recovered this money or not.

When some poor people bring gold from gulf to make some extra money in thousands or lakhs by avoiding tax,( this is absolutely an offence) those people are portrayed as anti nationals and entire community is blammed for it.Now this cheating in crores will affect one community or not? are they anti nationals? There can be more such cases.

Enough we seen a lot from these TWO party leaders. Now it is the right time to chose a new party with a qualified leaders. Better option to call ARAVIND KEJRIWAAL to Mangalore.

It would be nice if Daijiworld could set up a Whistleblower Hotline or Whistleblower Website to provide the public and employees with an opportunity to express concerns such as:

    • Theft of City resources (e.g., cash, equipment, supplies, or materials)
    • Improper activities by City officials, employees, and contractors
    • Misuse or waste of City resources, including government funds
    • Misuse of City equipment or property

What a Excellent step to show none of the highly mighty of Mangalore are away from the law.. Please also do raids on all other professional colleges.. who manipulate the law exploit and criminalise things.. setting up eateries without permit in the campus without adequate approval.. Illegally charging students for electricity and the second selling of Internet through wifi... ALso charging illegally for college bus and paying below par tax to RTO.. these are some of the crimes most colleges commit to circumvent the law and make more money. None of these estimated charitable institutions are not really charitable except for getting a reprieve of income tax..

KMC is registered at MCC and availed 950KVA and supplied the electricity from the same connection since Dental College belongs to the same college. If there is no seperate door number to the Dental college why should they get seperate RR No from Mescom? Anyhow they are paying electricity charges to the department. Please check all other industrial users and the employees of MESCOM all over Karnataka State So that all farmers can avail free electicity in the state.

Blatant misuse of public resources going on since so many years and Aam Aadmi had to step in to expose this!!

No doubt Arvind Kejriwal has thrown out heavy weight stalwarts and won!! AAP's win is is the start of a revolution to cleanse the system of large scale misuse of public utilities by the influential and powerful!! And just imagine how much the Aam Aadmi will benefit even if 10% of such activities are exposed and brought to justice!!

Acted only after Mr. Saheb pointed out such a big theft of Electricity Power?
    Vigilant meaning alert? Observant?

May be something may have blinded them all these years...
After all it is one of the departments of the famous Manipal Medical College\Hospital...
They were so sure no one can touch them in whatever they do there in Manipal!!!

What Dental College was doing is illegal. But I don't agree with the concept of loss to the MESCOM except for the initial licencing fees. Because, the Dental College was drawing the power from KMC Hospital, and the power charges are paid by the KMC to MESCOM.
