Narayana Murthy bats for Modi as PM candidate

New Delhi, Dec 14 (DHNS): Backing Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as a prime ministerial candidate, Infosys mentor N R Narayana Murthy said on Saturday that the BJP’s poll mascot should be allowed to show a “sense of contrition” to end the debate on his alleged involvement in the post-Godhra riots.

“When it came to the discussion of a certain somebody from a certain party, I said, look, the reality of the matter is as long as we accept that we did something that was not right, as long as we are willing to show a sense of contrition, we’ll have to move on. Otherwise we will argue on this till the fire freezes,” he said in a discussion at the NDTV Solutions summit here.

Murthy did not name Modi or referred to the Gujarat riots  during the discussion, but when asked if he was referring to BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, he nodded in agreement.

This was not the first time Murthy praised Modi. However, his reactions assumed significance in the context of many political parties calling to prevent Modi from becoming the prime minister owing to the 2002 Gujarat riots which took place when he was the chief minister.

Earlier several times, Murthy said we should simply accept Modi as he has done something good in Gujarat.  Referring to repeated discussion on Gujarat riots, Murthy said instead of giving a chance to Modi, we keep debating the issue time and again.

“Let’s also remember one thing that courts have not indicted the gentleman. The courts have not passed any strictures, any judgment and therefore the best we can do at this point of time is to accept a sense of contrition from the individual and then move on. Because, otherwise we can go on with this time and again for the next 100 years,” he said.

Murthy added: “While, I am fully committed to secular democracy as the fundamental cornerstone of India for ages to come, I only said that we are all human beings. God is not finished with us. Therefore, let us give an opportunity to the individual to show his sense of contrition and then move on.”

Echoing his views, former Union minister Arun Shourie said the better way “is to focus on the pluralism of the Indian society and not the secularist aspect.”

For many of us, Mr. Murthy's comments may surprise us. We are not used to conclusions based on action or achievement. We are used to slogans of politicians day in and day out. However, here is a CEO of company that he built from scratch. In order to do that sloganbaji does not work. You need to be methodical, sensitive and decisive. And it should not be of surprise to us that Mr. Murthy therefore supports Modi. And there are some who believe Modi means big business appeasement. But agricultural productivity in Gujarat also has increased under his watch. Somebody with vision must take over India who can remove our farmers from the clutches of offering to God for rain and make them self reliant by integrating them to firmly to the market and turn them into important stakeholders.
I heard a friend of mine say the other day about an event presided over by Mr. Murthy and Mr. Kamath. All the paltry attending the event came in sporting their best suit in their BMWs and expensive four-wheelers, while the people who mattered viz., Mr. Murthy and company came in the same vehicle fully manufactured in India and were simple dressed.

    Hi Peter/ Every Reader
You are talking about giving respect to a person who achieved many more things in life that we just dream of. (Eg: Infosys)
He had made so many works for Humanity. Contributed So much money for Development of the state. Because of him and his company we have so many employments in India and We have achieved great heights in IT sector. World Recognised India because of him and He achieved it not by his power or not sitting idle, But with his mind and plans to achieve something great and something impossible.
And about giving land to him, I totally agree with it, Even if he get it he will try to improve IT sector and he will never use it for his personal gain. Best example is the way he works and the salary he takes. As I heard he is working for a peanut, Very less amount of money.

And He can talk about anybody. Even we can. That's the freedom we have got. We can share our thoughts and our opinions with others.

    Thank you..

AA & P (Aam Admi & the People) is the power and capable to do a change in life.
Discussion about political parties and wealthy leaders is purely a waste of time.
It is our right and obligation to join together to find solution to our severe problems.
Neither we need free food nor wish to be idle, but want to earn and live, with respect.

It is really sad thing to follow the old fashion and style just as a practice and culture.
If we save 50% of our fuel consumption and stop oil subsidies, we can see a wonder.
The time is to recognize and accept a serious mistake which we follow since centuries.
We feel inferior to talk about bullock carts, but we don’t hesitate to carry them on wheels.

The mobile is high on air and the progress in these couple of decades is unbelievable.
In the meantime, the automobile is still pulling on with tortoise style with expensive effort.
If we use the bull to pull the cart, we can make a revolutionary change in surface transport.
The opportunity is to save a huge volume of fuel, eliminate pollutions and reduce costs.
Let us create enormous jobs for rapidly growing volume of graduates and degree holders.

Modi offering seats only to big personalities like Industrialists, Cricketers & film stars. He never think about the poor and common man.
Whenever somebody talks about Gujarat massacre, his supporters in this forum bringing anti sikh riots here. Sikh riots are not made by congress, but still congress already apologized for that. so that chapter is closed, no need to remind it again and again. But Modi have no courtesy for that. Choice of the voters, what they choose. Free democratic India or a dictator.

With due respect to Narayana Murthy, he is eying how much cheap govt.land he can get in India for his Infosysis Company. They have shown their honesty in USA by paying USD 350 million as fine. Ultimately, Mr Murthy is betting Modi, for his personal benefit.

He has transformed India to a great extent!
We are morally bound to honour him!
However, Industrialists have their own reasoning to support a person or party!
All are interested in themselves and aware of their problems!
But common people (Aam Aadmi) who forms vast majority, will support AAP, if they get proper exposure all over India before Lok Sabha elections.
Most of the Industrialists will NOT back AAP or Communists, they have their own reasons to do so.
In the last 10 years gap between rich and poor has widened!
AAP and Communists can only narrow the gap.

Its just hypocrisy that some section of society, forget about other riots like 1984 sikhs massacre, while criticizing BJP for Godhra riots. The problem is that Modi does not want to show any sign of contrition. Secondly does Narayana Murthy understand the pain of losing near and dear ones to violent deaths... so my question to him is how does he want the victims of the riot to accept the contrition and move on. Finally, if contrition and moving on is the solution to such things, then we dont need courts. We can always do anything that includes being responsible for a massacre, and then show signs of contrition and move on. No matter what,BJP will come to power this time and rule for next 5 or 10 years. Regardless of development it makes, it has to fall down after 10 years.
Price rise of the commodities is the main psychological factor in the minds of the voters and automatically blame the ruling party for the price rise rather corruption or religious affiliation.

I have great respect for Mr. Narayana Murthy. Just because he is endorsing Modi as PM candidate he does not come out clean, innocent, legitimate or ethical. Modi would have promised him a free land or bldg. to start Infosys in Gujarat. Modi's hands are still tainted with blood of thousands of innocent muslims perished under his barbaric rule and he is still being haunted by the 2002 carnage.

This is another example of a Modi biased media. During the same NDTV Solutions series of interviews with various personalities, Bharat Ratna and Nobel Laureate Dr. Amartya Sen disagreed with Mr. N.R. Narayana Murthy's opinion on Modi.

Amartya Sen when asked said to Nidhi Razdan of NDTV that no individual of the Congress personally accused in the 1984 riots have aspired to be PM whereas in the Gujarat 2002 riots Modi who is a PM aspirant has actually been accused by many of complicity in the riots in some way.

However this news conveniently does not make it to the news portals. Why this special favour to Mr.Modi ???

Also Mr. N.R. Narayana Murthy does not seem to remember the fake encounter cases in Gujarat where Modi's name crops up. Why Mr. Murthy ?

No individual in the Congress who has been personally accused of complicity in riots or any encounters is aspiring for the PM's post. Can the same be said about the BJP ???

No hurdle to Modiji becoming PM of India as Congress getting wiped off from many states.

It is time to concentrate on secular issues like inflation, falling rupee and effective public systems rather than illusive debates on linguistic meaning of secularism and its political misinterpretations.

Murthy, Ambani, Tata, Birla etc. . they are big corporate lords and they do not represent an ordinary citizens of rural india. These so called corporates definitely would like Modi to be PM to serve their own interests. This is why they are projecting Narendra Modi as a “development” messiah. Murthy’s statement signals Mode would be a better servitor of the corporates than other Leader

    Well said Murthy Sir.

Congress would have performed better in the 5 state election, if they concentrated on election, rather than :

    1. Raking up closed 2002 matter again and again. Even muslims knew it is their fault of setting train on fire.
    2. Snooping row of Amith Shah though Saheb was not bothered about it.
    3. Probing the AAP party account.
    4. Finding the source of money for Aam Admi party etc.

See now, once the result is out, congress have forgotten all these. Even muslims are with Modi, they know Modi is innocent in 2002 riot. In Muslim dominated Ajmeer district of RAjasthan BJP won 7 seats out of 8. It is jobless congis who are spreading wrong propaganda about Modi.

Nandan Nilekani is brain washed by congis. Nandan has been made scapegoat by congress in aadhaar project. Now he wants to save his face with help of congis.

If Nandan contest as Independent candidate from Bangalore South he will secure more votes than with congress candidature.

Slowly but gradually every business men will accept NaMo as PM candidate because of two reasons, firstly they have no other choice except NaMo, secondly, what may be his past records regarding Gujarat riots but he is non-corrupt yet. So, NaMo means business and this is the “Mantra” for modern India and our well known businessmen always ready to grab the opportunity.

But Namo should take some lessons from the debacle of Chandrababu Naidu. All the Indian Businessmen and many foreign businessmen hailed Naidu as the Most Progressive CM India had ever seen. But in the very next election he was defeated by YSR because Naidu had alienated himself from the Villagers in his eagerness to cultivate Big Businessmen and concentrated only on Hyderabad and neglected Rural Sector.

But he should get out from the clutches of Communal organisation, which divide the nation with race, caste, religion, etc.
He should be converted from the communal mind to the secularism.
