Mangalore, Dec 16: R Hitendra on Monday December 16 assumed charge as the police commissioner of Mangalore city in a simple ceremony held at the police commissionerate.

He took over the charge from Manish Karbikar, who has been transferred as the DIG of Karnataka State Reserve Police.

Addressing the media, Hitendra said, "I know that there have been a number of instances of communal violence and underworld activities in Mangalore. The city also lacks in some of the basic amenities. I will study the situation and take appropriate steps."

When asked about conflicts among jail inmates and the possibility of shifting them to other prisons, he said, "There are three main groups among the jail inmates and we have separated them. We cannot shift everyone to Bellary or Bangalore prisons as they have to be produced in the courts here. Only court in the city has video conference facility, and hence it would be a problem."

He also sought support from the media in fighting against anti-social elements and in creating awareness among people.

He further added that he was not new to Mangalore as he had begun his career with a five-month stint in the city.

Hitendra, who hails from Kolar, belongs to the 1996 batch of Karnataka police. He has also done BE in electronics.

He was appointed SP (banking security and fraud cell) of CBI, Bangalore on November 1, 2006 and held the post till March 31, 2010. From April 1, 2010 to October 2013, he served as DIG of anti-corruption department, CBI, Bangalore.

He has worked on a number of important cases including the Satyam Computers scam and the illegal mining scam.

In 2012, Hitendra was awarded the Police Medal for Meritorious Service on the occasion of Independence Day.

    Anyway good luck to Hitendra..
