Mangalore, Dec 16: The Supreme Court's recent verdict on Section 377, terming homosexuality a criminal offence, evoked protest from a cluster of students in the city on Monday December 16.

The students - all dressed in black - took out a protest march from Bendore to KSR Rao Road via Balmatta, Bunts Hostel and PVS.

Most of them held placards expressing solidarity with and support to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) community and demanding their rights. "We march for a brighter India without discrimination, inequality and injustice," a media release from the students stated.

The placards read, 'Stop discrimination against homosexuals', 'Repeal 377', 'It's about humanity, not gender', 'The state has no right to enter into people's bedrooms', 'Being different is not a crime' and many more.

Organizer Kushuboo said, "We are here to make people feel uncomfortable. It's a serious issue and so we need to talk about it. The Constitution of India promises its citizens right to equality, but the verdict is unfair. We will stand with the deprived," she added.

Disha Prabhu, a student of journalism and mass communication said, "We urge the Supreme Court to overturn the verdict on Section 377."

The media release by the students further stated, "The Supreme Court judgement on Section 377 is outdated and negative. The Supreme Court of India has set aside the 2009 Delhi high court ruling that decriminalized private consensual sex between adults of the same sex...Homosexuality is a criminal office now."

To all who opposing gay or LGBT right,
Hope all get to feel what it means to be one of them and feel the humiliation...
If not this life... next for sure.
If its more unnatural it would not have been there at all. Its not borrowed from the west.. If you look closely among your people there may be many such suppressed lot. Its not their choice.. Its how God has made them.
Like how we do not know why road accidents or any other tragedy happens even when God is the king of the world..
A transgender is born to humans.. he cannot be thrown into street for what he is born as..
Parents take care of their baby irrespective of what they are.
No doubt its very difficult to accept..
My only request to all is if you are not able to accept it, at least dont hurl abusive comments as though its their choice.
Its like a question to a Brahmin why they do not eat meat when we all know hunting and eating was a source of food..
Do we force Brahmin to eat meat?
Society please stop being judgmental.... because its a waste of your energy or time as nature is stronger than any of your thoughts or comments.

    Times View
A number of specious arguments have been advanced to argue against decriminalization of homosexuality.

    • That it is unnatural. There’s a wealth of scientific evidence that suggests otherwise, and that it's part of the genetic coding of a section of the population (please refer to our edition of December 13).

•That it is against ‘our culture’. Again not true, because our ancient texts and our art are replete with instances of homosexuality (see TOI of December 12 and 13). Fact is, the anti-gay law was enacted by our erstwhile colonial masters 153 years ago and reflected their Victorian values, not ours. (Even the British have long since discarded it, and have now cleared same-sex marriage.)

•That it is immoral. So, a man who is in multiple relationships with women would perhaps be considered “immoral”. But are his actions criminal? Ultimately, that’s what it boils down to: Is it criminal? ~TOINS~ 17 Dec 2013

Find the difference between rapists and homosexuals. One is not scared of them. They find their own partners but not rape. Rapists are walking free in this country. Instead can we think of interacting with them, knowing their emotions, inner feelings, help them for a better living. It is time we all join together and build a just society than harassing them.

This law is prone to be missused It’s not just gay sex that Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code criminalises. The Supreme Court’s unequivocal declaration that every consensual sexual act barring peno-vaginal intercourse forms a criminal offence under the section has sparked concerns even among heterosexual couples.

The fear is greater among men because, although the section is gender-neutral, it explains that ‘penetration’ is sufficient to constitute an offence. Thus, even oral sex would be punishable, even if it is consensual.
A senior criminal lawyer said the SC judgment upholding the constitutional validity of Section 377, along with a recent judgment of a constitution bench that the police have a mandatory duty to register an FIR on receiving any information which discloses a cognisable offence, can result in the section being misused.~TOINS~

1,500 animal species practice homosexuality...(google)..to the unread.......
The most well-known homosexual animal is the dwarf chimpanzee, one of humanity's closes relatives. The entire species is bisexual. Sex plays an conspicuous role in all their activities and takes the focus away from violence, which is the most typical method of solving conflicts among primates and many other animals.

"Sex among dwarf chimpanzees is in fact the business of the whole family, and the cute little ones often lend a helping hand when they engage in oral sex with each other."

Lions are also homosexual. Male lions often band together with their brothers to lead the pride. To ensure loyalty, they strengthen the bonds by often having sex with each other.

Homosexuality is also quite common among dolphins and killer whales. The pairing of males and females is fleeting, while between males, a pair can stay together for years. Homosexual sex between different species is not unusual either. Meetings between different dolphin species can be quite violent, but the tension is often broken by a "sex orgy".

U are very right AP, it is widely observed in Nature too for various reasons and not fully understood by Science till date!! There are some creatures who have both sexes in a single body (hermaphrodite, earthworm) and then there are some animals who can change sex per demands of Nature!! Definitely there is a big reason for such aberrant behavior in Nature!! And the LGBT as we know are part of this aberration and should not be looked down upon as most of them have been created by Nature in all its wisdom, it is not a matter of choice but they are born like that!! Just citing from scriptures and condemning them is no sound reason at all!!

Definitely these young bold boys and girls, are not fighting for themselves. They are very normal young group who have taken up the cause of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) community and demanding their rights and equality for them.

Just look at the dress code, very decent and every body comes from educated family back ground. I am sure, even their parents will support these young lads.

To some, raising voices for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) community rights might be new because to discuss any issues pertaining biological growth in human beings are considered as subversive to their own back ground. But to others who discuss openly these type of issues with their pals and peer group, these are quite normal, natural & they are more open to the changing living style in society. Even though , Gay, Bisexual are immoral, they are not criminals. They want a space to live in society with dignity, compassion, acceptability.

They do not know that if their father and mother was not united, they wouldnt have come on this earth and not because of their father united with father.
We all know that homosexuals exist. But legalizing it will be like inviting a bigger tragedy.
Instead we should thing on how to normalize these people.
If rehabilitation centers are required then we should make it.
If it is harmonal problem then inject more male or female harmons whichever is required to them to normalize.

IN OUR CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLY this twenty-sixth day of November, 1949,DO HEREBY ADOPT, ENACT AND GIVE TO OURSELVES THIS CONSTITUTION.”

And the constitution further moves on to say in Article 14:- Article 14 of the constitution guarantees the right to equality to every citizen of India . It embodies the general principles of equality before law and prohibits unreasonable discrimination between persons. Article 14 embodies the idea of equality expressed in preamble.

So grow up guys. Please do not show your narrow minded ignorant thoughts in this 21st century.

At least these young people are helping their friends who are silently suffering. If you people have nothing to help other human beings in the society then do not show your frustrations here.

They have born in that form, due to the reasons unknown even to them and beyond their control, which is not their fault. Many times we tease, look down Transgender (LGBT) community. Some to these Transgender (LGBT) community members have very sad and heartbreaking experience even from the protector of law, ie from police personnel.

Gay sex is unhealthy & gives rise to so many diseases like AIDS, syphilis etc.... Gays even harass straight guyz... By legalising, Gay harassment definitely gonna increase as there is no fear.

Tomorrow they may even protest to legalise sex with pets or kids...

How can SC can pass judgement with 2 members in the bench, that these people are criminal which is utter non sense. That is why the world has condemned it including UN.

Glad that the youths in Mangalore, got the guts to protest against this SC judgement which is against human rights. Glad that the young girls are coming out to the street to raise their voices in support for Transgender (LGBT) community who have been sidelined in the recent SC judgement.

What is sad in SC judgement is instead of showing compassion to Transgender (LGBT) community, the supreme court judgement has cornered them instead bringing them to equality.

while this is widely debatable, a set of folks say this is not accepted in any religion.
Pls. understand what is acceptable and what is not , is for God to Judge.
Some of them say what if tomorrow they want to have sex with animals, if its ok with them it should be none elses problem.
If some say - it leads to HIV , HIV can come anyways it doesnt have to be through same gender sex.
If some say - it leads to rape - let us educate people that a rapist and bieng gay are 2 different things.

I know of so many people who are gay coz of circumstance in thier lives. some are heart wrenching too. THey have lost any physical attraction towards different sex due to various circumstances at home.

Let us not be harsh on these people. If they want to do something let them do it.
There are far more crimes that need to be considered illegal, that fighting for something that doesnt harm any of us.

If LGBT community consisted of substantial numbers in India, Congress would have not only supported them but would have implemented many appeasement schemes to them too!

Seems like you really dont understand the point here. Let me explain.
A straight man would like to spend his life with a woman. His orientation requires it. It is not his decision, but how he was born.
In the same way, a homosexual would like to spend his life with a man, is it his fault? No. Then why call him a criminal? There are sick, disgusting men who treat women as sex objects, should we be proud of being straight?

Now my point is, homosexuals arent causing harm to anyone anymore than normal couples do. So dont judge them like they arent human. Open your eyes and strive to make the world a better place rather than looking at people and judging them.
    Have a great day.
