Mangalore: Sumitha suicide case - Husband surrenders

Mangalore, Dec 19: Sunil Kumar, accused in the Sumitha dowry harassment and suicide case surrendered before the police on Wednesday December 18 evening.

Sunil, husband of Sumitha, appeared before the Kankanady rural police, who arrested him.

He was then produced before the magistrate and remanded in custody for 15 days.

Sumitha had got married to Sunil Kumar on May 26 this year. Ever since their marriage, Sunil and his family allegedly tortured her for dowry. Sunil had even mortgaged all her gold jewellery and demanded her to bring more.

Unable to bear the constant harassment, Sumitha consumed around 100 tablets on December 9 night at her parental house, and died a week later in a private hospital. Her body was handed over to her parents on Wednesday after post-mortem.

Cases were filed in Kankanady rural and Bantwal police station against Sunil, his parents Leela and Sudhakar and sister Divya.

The other accused are yet to be arrested. Sunil and his family members had reportedly gone absconding soon after Sumitha's death.

    Oh God! When will this scourge of dowry go away from our society! Cant our men have the guts to earn money themselves? Personally, I would be insulted to take money from someone without working for it... Or take loan from bank!

    You are all dreaming that Police will finish this case early.
    Already there may be so many threatening calls by politicians\vested interest\BD guys themselves to make the police squeamish and drag on the case as long as possible.
    Police should question Pumpwell to find out if he was sheltering Sunil when he was absconding.
    Home Minister should strictly instruct police not to give in to any threats and punish the guilty.

    Thank God he admitted .The rest are absconding.They may hide in front of human beings but in front of God cant hide.At least now they should surrender.how bad her parents will be Feeling the way in-laws treated their daughter and now hiding.what is the use when husband whatever he studied doesnt know to lead a peaceful life ,within a year bride suicides,means he married her only sake of Money ,no peace,love affection ,has blown out through windom .sad.

    @ bollu,
    some local newspapers published Sunil Kumar's wedding photo in which Bajarangi Sharan Pumpwell was present. So Sharan has no option than admitting he knows Sunil. Otherwise, he would have given statement 'who is sunil kumar? I don't know, I am staying in Pumpwell East & he is from Pumpwell West'!
    C'mon man...

    I request Mr. Thimarodi to push Govt & Police to punish culprit & fight against the dowry system.

    Marriage is all about 'Love-affection-care-understanding-supporting' not Give & Take.

    What surprised me is why anyone has to pay to get their daughters married. That shows that the parents are demanding their daughter to marry? When will dowry end in INDIA? The only people who will ultimately do anything about dowry and change the culture are Indian women is Education, Financial independence etc will change the society.

    Bollu suicide is offence, however would you please explain me if the girl was forced for suicide or mentally harassed fiscally torturing making party inside the house and forcing to serve food and alcohol is it looks good shouting in front of so called friends is this Indian culture.
