Bangalore, Jan 7: The sixth Economic Census, which has been launched in Karnataka, is expected to be complete by January end, Information Technology and Planning Minister S R Patil said on Tuesday.

The last five census had been conducted during the years 1977, 1980, 1990, 1998 and 2005.

The Economic Census data provides a base for studying the structure and composition of the various industrial sectors and their contribution.

Over 42000 enumerators and 22000 supervisors have completed about 70 per cent of the census work.

Other states already completed the census work, he said.

A draft report on the census would be submitted to the Union Government by January end and final and detailed report of the enumeration would be made available by March 2014, he said.

The major objective of the Census was to provide detailed information on operational and other variables, activity wise, of all the establishments (excluding crop production, plantation, public administration, defence and compulsory social security).

Enumerators would visit all households in the State and collect information about the economic activities of each and every family.

The census data would help the state government to identify priority areas while formulating poverty alleviation programmes, he said.

The Centre had released Rs 13 crore to the state for census work. The total cost of Census in India is estimated at Rs. 763.49 crore.

The state government would receive Rs 11,507 crore for 13 centrally sponsored schemes, including the job scheme, Sarva Shikshan Abhiyana and Integrated Child Development Scheme.

The progress of these programmes is being monitored by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah every three months.

The State Planning Department has decided to publish districts and taluk level human index development reports, Patil said.
