M'lore: ‘Psychopharminar' to be held on Jan 12 at Father Muller College

Mangalore, Jan 10: An interactive seminar was held which envisages to give a quick overview of new trends in psychopharmacology by internationally recognized experts in the field of psychiatry. This will be a international seminar on recent trends in Psychopharmacology.

This venture is being organized by the Department of Psychiatric Nursing, Father Muller College of Nursing in collaboration with Department of Psychiatry, K S Hegde Medical Academy, Nitte University, Deralakatte along with UNESCO Chair in Bioethics South India Unit and World Psychiatric Association section on Psychiatry in developing countries, will be held in Mangalore on January 12 at Father Muller Decennial Memorial Hall, at 9 am.

This seminar is a new step taken by the Department of Psychiatric Nursing to provide a platform to the eminent people in the field of psychiatry, psychiatric nursing and pharmacology. The seminar willfocus on the recent trends in psychotropic drugs in treatment of various psychiatric disorders and in various populations.

Having the knowledge of psychotropic drugs will help the mental health professionals to develop clinical skills in relevant assessments and interventions for the patients receiving such drugs. It is the growing challenge for the professionals to understand potential benefits and limitations of the different types of drugs. Effective collaborative professional relationship provides the patients with comprehensive treatment planning.  Nevertheless, greater reliance on psychotropic has created ethical and legal concerns. Psychopharmacological competency necessitates sensitivity to ethical considerations.

This seminar will be beneficial to the psychiatrists, pharmacologists, psychiatric nurses, psychologists, psychiatric social workers and pharmacists who are the prominent members of the mental health team.
The seminar is an initiative with the aim of updating recent trends in psychiatry in the coming years so that the psychiatric patients in the various places of Karnataka and the neighboring states are benefitted.
