China warns consumers against Fonterra products

Beijing, Jan 14 (IANS): China Tuesday warned its citizens not to consume a batch of fresh cream products currently being recalled by Fonterra, a New Zealand-based dairy company.

According to a statement from the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, the cream products, manufactured Jan 6 with a best before date of Jan 21, might have brought after overseas purchases or sent to China through parcels, reported Xinhua.

The products were not exported to China, the statement said warning its citizens not to consume them even if they came through other sources.

The statement came after the New Zealand-based dairy giant said, it was conducting a recall involving 8,700 bottles of fresh cream containing E. Coli bacteria which were distributed in New Zealand.

It was the second dairy scare involving Fonterra within six months, after it said in August that some exported whey products to China may contain botulism-causing bacteria.

Fonterra is a multinational dairy co-operative owned by 10,600 New Zealand farmers. The company is responsible for approximately 30 percent of the world's dairy exports.
