Mangalore: Rare heart surgery performed at AJ Hospital

Mangalore, Jan 16: A fifty five year old patient from Udupi who suffered a major heart attack, landed in a grave complication called ventricular septal rupture.  Surgical correction was the only option for most such case but carried a very high mortality rate.

He was taken up for emergency surgery.  Large part of interventricular septum was ruptured due to damage to heart muscle following heart attack and had multiple openings.  Defect was corrected with double patch technique using artificial patches and bypass graft for occluded coronary vessels.

Cardiothoracic surgery Team of AJ Hospital and Research Centre headed by Dr Jayashankar Marla conducted successful surgery on patient with Ventricular septum rupture following myocardial infarction.

Post operation recovery was smooth and patient was discharged within one week.  Patient is doing well in the first follow up.

Cardiac Surgery team of AJ Hospital and Research Centre has performed more than 2000 surgeries with a very high success rate.
