Mangalore: Wrestling contest sees enthusiastic participation

Mangalore, Jan 21: A district level wrestling competition for men and women of Dakshina Kannada District was inaugurated here on Tuesday January 21 at the Karavali Utsav grounds.

The competition has been organised to observe the 11th year death anniversary of labour leader late Lokayya Shetty by Dakshina Kannada District Kusthi Sangha.

Sureshchandra Shetty, honorary president welcomed the guests and introduced the participants to the spectators gathered around.

K Monappa Bhandari, former district president of BJP inaugurated the ceremony.

J R Lobo, MLA, Mangalore South unveiled the portrait of late Lokiaiah Shetty and in his speech, he said "Lokayya Shetty was a honest and good person known to all. Wrestling is not new in this town; but due to some reasons wrestling is fading out. Sureshchandra Shetty has done a very good job."

Chief guest, T P Shivakumar, additional superintendent of police inaugurated the arena and conveyed his wishes to the athletes.

For men the wrestling will be held in categories (kg) such as : 35, 45,50,55,60,66,75 and 85, while for women wrestlers the categories will be ; 45,50,55,60 and 65. The best wrestler will be conferred with ‘Karavali Kesari’ and ‘Karavali Kumar’ titles.

K Suresh Ballal, former MUDA president, presided over the ceremony. Raghunath Shet, owner of S L Shet diamond house, Rathnakar Kamath, secretary of cosmo bulletin club, Sukpal Puthran, Sandeep S Rao and others were present.

The valedictory ceremony will be held at 6 pm on January 21 at the same venue. J R Lobo, MLA will preside over the ceremony.
