M'lore: Police, Capitanio School join hands to create road safety awareness

Mangalore, Jan 26: Mangalore rural police held the ‘National Road Safety’ awareness campaign in association with Capitanio School, Mangalore, on Saturday January 25.

A procession was held from Capitanio School back to the venue via Pumpwell Circle. Nearly 450 students accompanied by their teachers and rural police staff took part in the procession.

A formal function was also held after the procession. Shivaprakash, police sub inspector for law and order addressed the students and urged them to follow  traffic rules in future, so as to give more importance to road safety. He also asked them not to drive the vehicle until they reach 18 years of age.

Nanda Kumar, police sub inspector for crimes, was also present on the dais.

Sr Jacintha, principal of Capitanio, welcomed and Lousie, high school teacher, rendered the vote of thanks. Students, teachers, and police staff were present on the occasion.

    ONE ASPECT OF ROAD SAFETY IS UNFORTUNATELY NOT TAUGHT IN THE SCHOOLS. NAMELY, THAT WE SHOULD WALK ON THE FOOTPATH ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE ROAD i.e IN THE DIRECTION OF THE ON COMING TRAFFIC SO THAT WE ARE AWARE OF THE TRAFFIC COMING TOWARDS US AND CAN GO TO THE SIDE IF A VEHICLE IS COMING TOO CLOSE TO US. AND NOT ON THE LEFT SIDE WITH THE TRAFFIC COMING FROM BEHIND US AS WE WILL NOT BE AWARE OF A VEHICLE ABOUT TO COME ON US

    ON MAKING ENQUIRIES IT SEEN THAT EVEN TEACHERS ARE NOT AWARE OF THIS BASIC RULE. NO WONDER THE PROCESSION OF THE STUDENTS (ASIN THE PHOTOS)SHOW THEM WALKING WITH THE TRAFFIC COMING FROM BEHIND THEM . THIS IS A WRONG PRACTICE FOLLOWED BY ALL PROCESSIONS . WILL THE POLICE EXAMINE THIS SUGGESTION.

    EVEN PEOPLE GOING FOR MORNING WALK DO NOT SEEM TO KNOW THIS AND WALK WITH THE TRAFFIC COMING FROM BEHIND THEM .WHEN IBRING THIS TO THE KNOWLEDGE OF OTHERS DURING MY MORNING WALK TRHEY JUST LAUGH IT AWAY. I TELL THEM THAT BY EDUCATING THEM OF THIS MY CONSCIENCE WILL BE CLEAR EVEN IF THEY CHOOSE NOT TO FOLLOW IT.

    BY FOLLOWING THE TRAFFIC RULE AS SUGGESTED BY ME, EVEN CHAIN SNATCHING CAN BE CURBED BECAUSE USUALLY THE SNATCHERS COME ON MOTORBIKES FROM BEHIND THE LADIES AND SNATCH THEIR CHAIN , WHEREAS IF THE LADIES ARE WALKING IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION THE CHAIN SNATCHERS CAN BE SEEN BY THEM AND SO WILL NOT BE ATTACKED.
    THE POLICE DEPARTMENT SHOULD MAKE A PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT AND SPREAD THE MESSAGE THROUGH SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES.

    I REQUEST ALL LIKE MINDED READERS WHO AGREE WITH MY SUGGESTION TO SPREAD THIS MESSAGE AND PUT PRESSURE ON THE AUTHORITIES TO IMPELEMENT IT
