Mangalore, Jan 31: Deputy commissioner (DC) A B Ibrahim, at the road safety committee meeting here on Thursday January 30, expressed  disappointment over the performance of the MCC and described its performance as ‘nothing keeps moving’, be it pending traffic issues or development works.

He further told the MCC officials to install speed breakers at 30 spots across the city.

"Installing speed breakers would not be too expensive. Set the speed breakers within 15 days by co-ordinating with the traffic department," he told the MCC.

Members of the auto rickshaw association who were present at the meeting urged, "Out of 5,600 auto rickshaws in the city only 1,000 auto rickshaws have auto stands. Already, applications have been given to increase the number of auto rickshaw stands in the city. So far no initiative has been taken. Also, auto rickshaws from the rural area are entering the city using duplicate numbers. The RTO should also provide regional numbers which will be useful to identify the auto rickshaw.”

In response, the DC asked the RTO to prepare a proposal to prepare identity cards for auto drivers and identification of drivers to display in auto rickshaws. The auto rickshaw drivers replied that as this is a communally sensitive area, it is very difficult to display the names in auto rickshaws.

The deputy commissioner also ordered the preparation of an action plan to give a facelift to Hamapankatta circle on an international level which will enrich the beauty of the city. The DC also asked the MCC to provide requirements for the work of painting the zebra crossing and various signs.

They also discussed many issues including road widening, parking problems, and installing barricades, skywalk, installing deviation and sign boards in the appropriate places and prepare auto rickshaw service in the vicinity of the bus stand and railway station.     

On this occasion, MCC Commissioner Ajith Kumar Hegde, RTO Mallikarjun and other officers were present.
