New Delhi, Jun 5: Putting a stop to all speculation on the issue of power sharing in Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi said it was an understanding between Congress and DMK to extend mutual support in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry.
 

"In Pondicherry, DMK will extend unconditional support to Congress government and in Tamil Nadu Congress will extend support to the DMK government. It was agreed upon even before the elections," he said at a press conference here.

With 34 MLAs in its bag, Congress thought it was within the reach of power after three decades. Congressmen in the state have been asking the DMK to include them in the minority government.

Observing that it was an unconditional support from allies, Karunanidhi questioned as to how his government could be considered a "minority government. We won the assembly polls by contesting in coalition".

"Was the Vajpayee government a majority government. He was waiting for a letter from Jayalalithaa," he said.

Earlier in the day, Karunanidhi, on his first visit after last month's electoral victory, met Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, President A P J Abdul Kalam and some Central Ministers.

Asked to predict the longevity of his government, the Chief Minister said "I am not bothered about how long it will run. I have lost power thrice earlier. I will do whatever I can for the people.

"What is the guarantee tomorrow we will be there," he said referring to the death of P T R Palanivel Rajan recently.

"If a situation arises when it is not possible to do something (for the people), then in that scenario, I will face the situation," Karunanidhi said.
