Mangalore, Jun 8: A talk on 'Higher Education and Affirmative Action' was conducted by SDM College here on Tuesday June 6, organised by the Mangalore Management Association (MMA) in collaboration with Mangalore Productivity Council (MPC), Institution of Engineers (India) and Kodagu, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi Engineers Association (KDKUEA).
Speaking on the occasion, Dr S S Murthy, former director, NITK (Suratkal) and present professor at IIT Delhi, opposed caste-cased reservation and said that there was a need for income-based reservation since the less affluent and more merited students may be denied education if caste-based reservation were to be implemented. He also expressed fear that caste-based reservation may lead to polarisation in campuses.
Among those present were MMA president K Devaraj, M Shekar of MPC, T R Bhat, local centre president, Institution of Engineers, and MMA secretary T G Shenoy.
