In the Guarantee of Happiness, Neighbours are Important: PM Narendra Modi Tells Bhutan

Thimphu, Jun 16 (Agencies) :  Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a two-day visit to Bhutan which is being seen as an attempt to assert his country's influence in south Asia where China is steadily making inroads.

On the second day of his visit today, Mr Modi is addressing Bhutan's Parliament.

On the first day of his visit on Sunday, Mr Modi said that having a good neighbour is important for a country's happiness and in its absence a nation cannot live in peace despite prosperity, in comments that may be seen as reference to China and Pakistan.

He made the remarks while reminding Bhutan that one of the factors responsible for its happiness was having a good neighbour like India.

"In the guarantee of happiness, it is important what kind of a neighbour you get. Sometimes you get such a neighbour that inspite of having all the happiness and prosperity, you cannot live in peace," Mr Modi said while speaking at a banquet hosted by Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay.

Mr Modi also assured Bhutan that India is committed to its happiness and progress even though the government in Delhi has changed, as he specified areas like peace, security, conservation and tourism for focus of pushing the ties.

"I said a while back B to B (Bharat to Bhutan and Bhutan to Bharat), I said it just like that but later I realised that it must be a sign from God that I said this," Mr Modi said.

Referring to Bhutan's unique trait of laying thrust on 'Gross National Happiness' rather than Gross Domestic Product (GDP), Mr Modi said one of the parameters for measuring this could be the consideration that it has a "neighbour like India".

"Bhutan's parametres of happiness, among them, one is having a friend like India. It is an important parametre for happiness. I firmly believe that. Because we know that what are the benefits of neighbours and what are the problems of neighbours. We know it very well. That is why, being a good neighbour is a big reason for happiness and it gives a chance for progress," Mr Modi said.

The Prime Minister underlined that India and Bhutan share not only land boundary but also the "glorious cultural traditions", which makes the relationship unique.

"The colour of our passports may be different but our thinking is the same...India stands committed to Bhutan's happiness and progress," asserted Mr Modi, who chose this country as his first foreign destination to send out a signal about special treatment for it.

"India is with Bhutan, with its success, its happiness, and will continue to be with Bhutan.

Governments might have changed in India, but we need to continue the cultural legacy and to continue tradition of peace and to make relationship between India and Bhutan stronger is our responsibility," Mr Modi said.

"To make them (ties) stronger, we have to change the spectrum of that growth. In a limited spectrum, relationships are made on the basis of 'Rupiya', 'paisa', but there is a lot more to relationships than this," he said.

Mr Modi commended Bhutanese King and the government for ensuring the country's progress despite difficulties and said India will continue to contribute to this.

Mr Modi made a mention of the grand reception he got since his arrival Bhutan. "I will remember this all my life," he said.

Well said, Modi. Two things: Charity starts at home and secondly, Love thy Neighbour. Have you seen any neighbours in united DK and even in Goa in peace and harmony? Modi's exemplary attempt will surely bring great results like unfriendly England and Ireland living peacefully by the side of each other.

Without being a Pm also I know this.
Maintaining a good relationship with neighbor, neighbor's wife and o.k fully family very very important. Now they also say 'grass looks greener' in neighbor's lawn and all that. It requires special research and experience to find it out personally.
As far as our immediate country neighbor is concerned his lawn is
'more red' than ours because of his own making. no amount of sense can be drilled into him.

Mr.Fernandes. Its nothing to do with any religion. You cannot fool people all the time. India is now educated, with the advent of technology public are more aware and their eyes are wide open. The Khans , Antanio Maino Khan & Raul Vinci Khan assumed that the public is dumb, however it back fired. It was as simple as that, I can assure you that if the current leadership flunks, they will meet with the same fate.

When there is China who is venturing in Bangladesh, Burma, Sri Lanka to build so many projects for the respective countries while having their hidden agenda, definitely its in India's interest to be cordial..in fact more friendly with the same countries as our relationship is bit strained in last decade with most of the neighbors!

Bhutan acts like Taliban. They expelled more than 107000 people mainly Hindus from their country who are still living as refugees at various parts of the world. Like Taliban they want to preserve their culture and identity and even they inter feared with the personal rights of individuals specially in wearing dress also. Unlike India they don’t believe in pluralism and unity in diversity. I don’t find any difference between Pakistan, china and Bhutan. All are fanatics.

Reaching out to neighbour is very important but reaching out to all sections of the societies consolidates the power of India in the neighbors.Considering the might of Bhutan, I think visiting Pak or China has greater importance but that does not mean India underestimates importance of tiny nations.Under the circumstances normalization of bilateral relations with PAK(with own terms)and China very important.

Strategically he is moving in the right direction.
Before talking to Pakistan and China he has to ensure rest of the small neighbours(Bhutan, Burma, ceylon, Bagladesh, Nepal) are in India's favour so that they are not exploited by these two countries.
Once he does it, half the work is done.
Pakistan and China will fall in line automatically.

Yes P.M. Modiji, for peace and happiness in the region, neighboring Countries are important.
Internal peace among all communities is even more important.
We can save a lot from security expenses, which can be used for development of infrastructure and quality of human life.
Our focus can be directed towards issues like poverty alleviation, healthcare, education, sports etc.

the names of the people you hate ,in foreign language.

Juliet Mai, I am only reactive. I am an Indian and always been proud to be one. The names are the real names of these individuals. Its a fact and not fiction. The Indian names are simply to fool the 'half educated' Indian public. In the early 80s Rajiv was boasting about the foreign names his wife and kids had. AFter his death they inherited these names to garner political mileage. Just think how on earth will Ms Indira Priyadarshini be Indira Gandhi when her husbands name is Feroze Khan S/o Mohd Khan?

    Dear Lingappa
Indira Priyadarshini Nehru married Feroze Jehangir Gandhi, who was born on 12 September 1912 in Nariman Hospital, Mumbai to a Parsi family. His parents were Faredoon Jehangir Gandhi and Ratmai, who lived in Kherwadi, Mumbai. Feroze Jehangir Gandhi died on 8th Sept. 1960 and his ashes were interred at the Parsi cemetery in Allahabad. You are talking of which Feroze Khan S/o Mahd Khan ? As per records, she never married other than this Parsi Gandhi.
