Amravati, Jul 30: In an unusual medical case at a private hospital in Amravati, Maharashtra, a 10-year-old girl underwent surgery to remove nearly half a kilogram of hair that had gathered into a mass in her stomach. The young patient, who had long suffered from digestive problems, including vomiting, loss of appetite, and weight loss over the past five to six months, revealed that she had a habit of eating hair.
Paediatric surgeon Dr Usha Gajbhiye explained that following the girl’s admission about 20 days ago, doctors conducted a thorough medical examination which confirmed the presence of the hairball. “During the surgery, we successfully removed about half a kilogram of the hairball from her stomach,” said Dr Gajbhiye, adding that the procedure has allowed the child to resume normal eating habits with no further complications.
The medical team is closely monitoring her recovery, and the doctor mentioned that the girl is expected to be discharged soon. This peculiar case has raised awareness among parents and caregivers about unusual eating habits in children and underscores the importance of timely medical intervention in preventing serious health issues.
