Bantwal, Jul 10: A farmer from Narimombu village in the taluk breathed his last after he was bitten by a poisonous snake.
The deceased has been identified as Krishnappa Poojary (59) from Nayila in Narikombu.
On Tuesday July 8, Krisnappa woke up at around 4 am and visited the cattle shed for feeding hay and water to the cattle. As soon as he inserted his hand into the heap of hay for drawing sheaves thereof, a snake that had been holed up there bit his hand. Thinking that a rat had bitten him, he put his hand again and was bitten by the reptile for the second time. The bites caused injuries to a finger and palm of Poojary.
Poojary did not take the wounds seriously and visited a local private hospital at around 9 am. He was immediately advised to be taken to a hospital at Kankanady, Mangalore. It is learnt that treatment given to him there failed to reverse his condition, as the poison had already spread to the brain and he breathed his last late in the evening.
Krishnappa Poojary is survived by wife and four daughters. Several people visited his house to mourn his death and offer condolences to the family.
