Mangalore, Jul 12: A drive to educate and create awareness of the children’s rights began at the bus stand opposite St Agnes college on Saturday July 12.
The child protection officer of DK district Usman inaugurated the programme by unfolding the banner of the awareness drive.
He said, "This is a unique program. Even though the child line has been working for the welfare of the children hardly many people know about it. Hence there is a need to create awareness about the organization which works for the protection of children’s rights. Every individual in the city should know about the child line and whenever a person finds violation of the children’s rights he/she should call 1098 number i.e. the child line number and help the child to grow in a good environment and enjoy its rights."
The president of the child welfare committee, Bondel Nikesh Shetty said, "Just because of the laws we cannot do anything. Everyone should know about the rights of the child. I wish that this drive will achieve success in its mission."
Dr Sr Prem D’souza who presided over the ceremony thanked the PADI and other associations for associating with the college.
She said, "It was the vision of the founder of the college that the college should work for the socially relevant issues and today by this program we are realizing it in a small way. The violation of the childrens rights is a national issue. I feel that every child has a right to be cared. Hence through these activities every student should take part in the growth of the society."
The HOD of Chemistry Dr Jayantha, program co-ordinator Mary D’souza and HOD of Social Work Dr Noyline were among the present.
The students of the St Agnes college created awareness at 15 major circles of the city and distributed handbills to people at the same time.
The program was organized by the Human Rights education cell of St Agnes College under the theme 'Samudayadhedege Agnes' which means to go to the society, in association with the district Child Welfare committee, child line and the PADI institute for child welfare.
