'Hellboy 3' not happening

Los Angeles, July 14 (IANS): Director Guillermo del Toro says that “Hellboy 3” won't happen because the sci-fi superhero movie lacks studio backing.

“Creatively, I would love to make it. Creatively,” variety.com quoted him as saying.

“But it is proven almost impossible to finance. Not from my side, but from the studio side. If I was a multimillionaire, I would finance it myself, but I spend all my money on rubber monsters,” he added.

This is so because the first two films were not profitable.

“Hellboy II: The Golden Army” earned $76 million, about $10 million less than its production budget, while “Hellboy” was about $6 million shy of matching its $66 million budget.

Del Toro even has a plot in mind for the closer to the franchise, which was launched in 2004.

The last instalment would see superhero demon becoming the beast of the Apocalypse.

“He has to become the best of the Apocalypse to be able to defend humanity, but at the same time he becomes a much darker being. It's a very interesting ending to the series, but I don't think it will happen,” said del Toro.

For now, the director is keeping busy with a “Pacific Rim” sequel, his thriller “Crimson Peak” and new FX show “The Strain,” which premiered Sunday.
